The spotlight will be on the important event in Varese on Sunday 28 April: the soprano Raina Kabaivanska, a true legend in the world of opera, will come to the Garden City to receive the “Città di Varese 2024 Award”. In the prestigious Salone Estense, at 3.30 pm, a Puccini concert will take place performed by two students of the famous Bulgarian singer: the soprano Iolanda Massimo and the tenor Giuseppe Infantino, accompanied on the piano by Maestro Marco Cadario. The programme, chosen by Mrs Kabaivanska, includes rare chamber compositions and the most famous pieces from the works of the composer from Lucca, whose death marks the 100th anniversary.

A true homage to Giacomo Puccini, with the arias and duets of Bohème, Gianni Schicchi, Madama Butterfly and, obviously, Tosca, the opera that most characterized the award-winner’s astonishing artistic career. During the concert the Mayor of Varese, lawyer. Davide Galimberti will present the award to the illustrious guest, who will have the opportunity to tell the public anecdotes and curiosities about his extraordinary career. City authorities and Dr. Ana Paskaleva, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Milan, will be present, who will institutionalize the tribute to the illustrious Bulgarian singer from an international point of view. The Governor of the Lombardy Region, lawyer. Attilio Fontana, a well-known opera enthusiast, wrote a touching message in which, congratulating the Municipality and the Friends of Opera for the initiative, he defines Mrs Kabaivanska as «a voice capable of inspiring and fascinating entire generations of opera fans in around the world, a stage presence of timeless grace and talent.”

The City of Varese Award, established in 1981 by the Friends of Opera, who began by awarding it to Renata Tebaldi and Mario Del Monaco, has brought the great names of opera to the Lombard provincial capital for over forty years and, with Raina Kabaivanska, will be able to include in its roll of honor one of the greatest singers in the history of the theatre.
Sunday afternoon at the Salone Estense will be an unmissable opportunity to hear the direct testimony of an unparalleled protagonist of the golden age of melodrama and to enjoy lots of good Puccini music, with which the award-winning artist has thrilled and moved countless melomaniacs all over the world throughout his long career.

Entrance 20 euros, for Amici della Lirica and Unitre members 10 euros, free for young people up to 20 years old. For any information: www.liricavarese.it
