MESSINA – “The mayor of Messina, Federico Basile, and his mentor Cateno De Luca, mayor of Taormina, have betrayed their voters: by siding so strongly, clearly and vulgarly against the Strait Bridge alongside the far left, they reneged on the announcements and promises with which they had won the elections. This is why it is correct that they resign now: the people of Messina and Taormina voted for them to have the Bridge”.
Thus the ‘Ponte Subito’ committee asks for the resignation of the mayors of Messina and Taormina, who in the last few hours have announced a large demonstration against the Messina Bridge on April 25th. “Yet until yesterday De Luca and Basile were always with us in the battle for the Bridge – continues the committee – we organized demonstrations together, they were in the front row of the demonstrations in which we asked for the Bridge to be built!”
“And now they say no, for who knows what political interest. But it’s not our job to say why they changed their minds. The problem is that they betrayed the electoral mandate received in Messina and Taormina, where they were voted for while professing to be strongly in favor of the Bridge. Now, however, they are like the ideologically opposed far left. But the people of Messina and Taormina would not elect them from No Ponte. They should resign immediately and stand again in their new role as ‘No-Pontista’”.
