PALERMO – Eleven were sent to trial, three chose the abbreviated trial and only two defendants – two women – were acquitted. These are the numbers from the preliminary hearing in the trial on the association that managed a rich online betting ring.

The defendants

Starting from next September 18th, the trial will begin in front of the second section of the Court towards Gaetano and Rosario Calascibetta, Salvatore Cinà, Davide Di Benedetto, Giacomo Dolce, Antonino Fanara, Renato Farina, Guglielmo Ficarra, Vincenzo Landolina, Daniele Lo Bello, Liborio Martorana. They chose the shortened procedure Vincenzo Caravello, Rosario Spina and Fedele Vitale.

Two women acquitted

Preliminary hearing judge Clelia Maltese has Francesca Lo Bello and Valentina Sciarratta acquitted, defended by lawyers Angelo Formuso and Massimo Motisi. Based on the new formulation of the Cartabia law the judge held that the elements acquired by the prosecution do not allow a reasonable prediction of conviction to be formulated. The two women, wives of other suspects, responded only to fictitious names.

The bosses and the bets

The district anti-mafia directorate and the Palermo flying squad discovered the existence of aa network of foreign online sites not recognized by the State Monopoly to collect bets. The role of Antonino Fanara, boss of Passo di Rigano, arrested in 2019 together with the Inzerillos, and Guglielmo Ficarra della Noce emerged.

According to the reconstruction of the deputy prosecutor Annamaria Picozzi and the deputy Vincenzo Amico inside the official agencies there were terminals for downloading bets abroad in illegal circuits.
