CGIL, Assembly of General Assemblies: Salerno ready for mobilization

Salerno

At the Saint Joseph Resort in Salerno almost 400 participated in the Assembly of the General Category Assemblies. All twelve categories and many associations, religious and secular, were present. At the presidential table were the General Secretary of CGIL Salerno, Antonio Apadula, the Secretaries of the Confederal Chamber of Labor Maria Sueva Manzione and Luigi Adinolfi, the General Secretary of CGIL Naples and Campania Nicola Ricci and the Organizational Secretary of CGIL Nazionale, Luigi Giove. The discussion was coordinated by the president of the Salerno assembly Pasqualino Picca.

The secretary Antonio Apadula opened the proceedings and, in his speech, touched on all the focal points of the initiative: safety, healthcare, wages, contracts, taxes and pensions. Apadula recalled the devastating numbers of deaths at work. «In the last twenty years there have been 26 thousand deaths at work. In 2023, 1041. In the first three months of this 2024, an incidence of 20% more was recorded compared to 2023, equal to an average of three deaths per day” – stated Apadula who, unable to contain his emotion , asked the audience for a minute’s silence. «Work is freedom, dignity, the possibility of imagining and building the future. They didn’t die on the job. They are real murders normalized by the absence of rules, controls and norms which, even if they exist, are not respected. There are tools to eliminate this social plague.” Salerno’s general secretary then spoke about the Scurati case and the dangerous censorship process that the Meloni government is implementing.

In fact, today’s Assembly, like all those taking place in Italy, has the function of getting to the heart of the referendum campaign. Three themes for four questions. The first two on layoffs: one on the overcoming of the contract with increasing protections and the other on compensation for small businesses, provided for by the Jobs Act; the third on the reintroduction of reasons for fixed-term contracts; the fourth is related to procurement, on the client’s responsibility for accidents.

«The referendums proposed by the CGIL – said the general secretary Nicola Ricci – are the political response that the union wants to give to this right-wing government and to change the laws in this country. Ours is a battle for democracy that we want to carry forward. Last Saturday we took to the streets in Rome, together with Uil, to make this Government hear the voice of the real country that demands health and safety at work, the right to healthcare and public healthcare and a real reform of taxes and wages. And then we are on the field – he continued – to thwart the attempt to overturn our Constitution through the bills on Differentiated Autonomy and Premiership, which we will counter with all the means and forces at our disposal”.

Jupiter also places emphasis on referendums: «To protect the work and dignity of workers we will present referendum questions we will begin the collection of signatures on April 25th we have chosen April 25th because we believe that work must be freed from subjection to profit and of the company and the blackmailability of workers” – concludes the organizational secretary of the national CGIL.
