VENETO – Strong wind and snow at low altitude: state of attention declared by the Region (forecast)

The regional weather forecast communicates that from the afternoon of today, 22 April, there will be a disturbed phase with widespread rainfall, including showers or local thunderstorms, in particular on the southern plain, with even substantial quantities of rain, especially on the central-southern plain . There will be a strengthening of winds from the north-east, at times strong, on the coast and plains and pre-Alpine ridges. The snowfall level will be around 800/1000m, even lower up to 600/800m towards the evening and during showers.

Based on these weather forecasts, the Decentralized Functional Center of the regional Civil Protection has issued a bulletin declaring the “Attention” operational phase:

· due to hydrogeological criticality in the Po, Fissero-Tartaro-CanalBianco and Basso Adige basin (RO-VR), from 2pm today to 9am tomorrow 23 April;

· for strong winds on coastal areas and plainsfrom 2pm today until 3am on April 23rd;

· for snowfallin mountain and foothill areas, from 2pm today until 8pm tomorrow.

SNOW

In reference to the meteorological situation expected in the regional territory, as per Meteo Veneto with a report issued by the Decentralized Functional Center of the Veneto Region today at 1.00 pm which predicts snowfall up to low altitudes for the days of 22 and 23 April for the season, with a limit decreasing to 600/800m between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, locally even lower during showers, with a subsequent limited increase during Tuesday (1000-1200 m), in order to guarantee constant monitoring of the situation and maximum operational readiness of the System

FORECASTS

Monday 10pm/evening. Skies generally very cloudy or overcast; rainfall overall
frequent and rather widespread, although with breaks; snowfall limit until the afternoon
rising from 700/1000 m to approximately 900/1200 m, falling again towards evening even up to
hilly altitudes especially in case of intense showers; daytime temperatures also dropping markedly
compared to Sunday unless stationary at altitude; regarding the prevailing wind of Sirocco in
altitude and on the southern coast, Bora on the rest of the flat areas, with intensity at least a
significant stretches especially at high altitude and on the coast

Tuesday 23. Disturbed to unstable weather, with clouds initially extensive and subsequently cleared, especially on the plains.
Rainfall. In the first hours, rather widespread phenomena, of moderate intensity especially in the internal areas, then gradually thinning out starting from the plain, but still with the possibility of showers; snowfall limit in the first hours at 600/900 m with episodes of rain mixed with snow up to hilly altitudes in case of showers, then gradually rising up to 1200-1500 m.
Temperatures. Minimum temperatures decreasing in foothill areas, mountain valleys and especially the Pre-Alps, stationary or slightly increasing at high altitudes and stationary or slightly decreasing elsewhere; for the maximums are expected
limited local variations in the central-eastern areas, moderate increases in the central-western and southern ones.
Winds. At altitude until the morning, moderate or at times locally tense from the south-east, then weak to moderate from the north-east; in the valleys, weak with variable direction; in the plains until the afternoon moderate north-eastern, even tense on the coast and neighboring areas, tending however towards the evening to become mostly weak from the north-western quadrants.
Sea. From rough to little rough.

Wednesday 24. Unstable weather, with frequent cloud accumulations and some probable phases of clearing.
Rainfall. Scattered and discontinuous phenomena are probable, including showers or occasional thunderstorms; snowfall limit generally around 1200-1500 m.
Temperatures. Minimum temperatures mostly moderately decreasing, except for local stationarity in the valleys; maximums increasing, especially in the south-west, except for local slight countertrends on the low north-eastern plain.
Winds. At altitude until the morning moderate or at times locally tense north-eastern, then weak to moderate north-western; in the valleys, weak with variable direction; in the plains initially weak with variable direction and then from weak to at least locally moderate, mostly from the north-eastern quadrants, with slightly more significant reinforcements on the coast.
Sea. Inshore of the central-northern coast from almost calm to slightly rough, elsewhere from slightly rough to rough.

Thursday 25. Variability with even large clear spaces in the early hours, more cloudy accumulations
significant starting from mid-day, associated with the probability of some precipitation, including showers or occasional thunderstorms; limit of possible snowfall at 1200-1500 m; for temperatures
limited local variations are expected, including various decreases in mountain areas and some
increases especially on the flat ones.
Friday 26. Irregular cloudiness alternating with clear spells, probably wider in the early hours; possible
some precipitation also in the form of showers or local thunderstorms, with the limit of any snowfall rising up to 1600-1900 m; temperatures rising, even sensitive to lows in the mountains.
