Sassari. The Sassari Local Health Authority presented on Monday morning the first Hospice in the north-west of Sardinia and the first RSA of the Local Health Authority n. 1, which will host 54 nursing home beds (RSA) and 6 hospice beds. «About 15 years ago work began on this building of a still current concept intended for RSA use – declared Flavio Sensi, general director of the ASL -. However, even following the completion of the work, the tender procedure for the assignment of the management service of the Rsa and the Hospice was started only in 2019, which in any case were never started. Just over a year ago, with the full operation of the ASL, following the corporate act, an operational task force was activated, whose objective was the plant and structural completion of the work, management of the contract with the private partner to which it has been entrusted and the achievement of all the organisational, technological and structural requirements for the full exercise of the activities. Today we present to the territory an innovative structure, the first public RSA and the first historic hospice in the north-west of Sardinia. Thanks to the collaboration of regional and local institutions, we have teamed up to activate this structure in the area which will complete the healthcare offer, which will also be followed by the Ploaghe Hospice by the end of the year”.

«Let us walk together, overcoming every conflict with a view to the good of the human person, united and generative, especially in the face of signs like these which fill a void and give a sign of hope to the needs of the human person and in this the Diocese can only ensure his active presence”, added the archbishop of Sassari Gian Franco Saba. «The demographic evolution we are witnessing places on us the obligation to think about the planning of these structures that allow us to have territorial services capable of dealing with the chronicity of pathologies also linked to the evolution of science and medicine which always allows us to more than treating diseases and therefore extending patients’ life expectancy, on the other hand by reducing the number of caregivers”, pointed out Vito la Spina, health director of the ASL.

A presentation in which the regional councilors Piero Maieli, Antonello Peru and Antonio Spano participated, as well as the leaders of the Sassari Aou. Satisfaction was expressed by the mayor of Sorso Fabrizio Demelas, accompanied by representatives of the Executive and Council of the Municipality of Rome, owner of the property entrusted under concession to the Local Health Authority.

The new structure obtained institutional accreditation on March 28th and will welcome the first patients from May 6th.
The building, which already houses the polyclinics with specialists from the Sassari District, has been redeveloped to house the assisted healthcare residence and the Hospice: 60 beds distributed, together with all the ancillary services, over a surface area of ​​approximately 5 thousand meters square, on four floors, surrounded by a green area and equipped with large verandas.

The first subfloor is dedicated to services. On the ground floor, a large hall has been set up, dedicated to reception, a kitchen and a dining room, a large gym and a rehabilitation swimming pool; on the first floor there are single and double hospital rooms, for a total of 33 beds, all equipped with toilets and an oxygen system, as well as a dining room and clinics; on the second floor there are another 27 beds, including those dedicated to the Hospice, as well as a dining room and clinics.

The healthcare residence is a residential structure aimed at providing continuous hospitality 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the provision of health services, functional recovery and social inclusion to users suffering from chronic illnesses or pathologies. disabling, non-self-sufficient and cannot be cared for at home and who do not require hospitalization in hospital facilities or global rehabilitation.

Of the 54 places in the RSA:

– 19 (level R2) are dedicated to extensive socio-health care: aimed at people who require high health protection and extensive care treatments (prolonged vegetative states or minimally conscious states, people on protracted enteral or parenteral nutrition, people with progressive neurodegenerative diseases in phase of non-self-sufficiency, tracheotomy recipients on mechanical ventilation, etc); intensive and extensive care for non-self-sufficient people requiring high commitment and healthcare protection. They are people, generally in the process of being discharged from hospital, who continue to present clinical instability due to pathologies of labile compensation and who require continuous monitoring.

– 35 (R3 level) dedicated to lower intensity socio-health care, divided into:
R3A profile: services aimed at providing care to non-self-sufficient people requiring health and social-health treatments for recovery and functional maintenance. They are people in moderately stable or moderately unstable clinical conditions who require further stabilization and recovery of function;
R3D profile: services aimed at people with dementia and behavioral or affective disorders who require pharmacological monitoring and treatment, rehabilitation and protection interventions in a protected environment

The Hospice Unit (six beds) offers an integrated complex of healthcare and hotel services, provided continuously 24 hours a day, seven days a week, aimed at people suffering from an active, progressive, advanced disease, with a poor short-term prognosis. The aim is to maintain an acceptable quality of life, alleviate the patient’s pain and the family’s sense of helplessness. It is part of the palliative care network which operates in close integration with home care

Following an open procedure for the management and provision of healthcare, hotel and maintenance services, the structure will be managed by the non-profit social cooperative Medihospes.
