Municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena – DURING THE FIRST WEEKEND OF MAY THE CITY SHOWCASED WITH “OPEN MONUMENTS”
Descriptive text here

A few weeks until the now classic city event with Open Monuments, the event dedicated to the promotion and valorisation of Sardinia’s cultural heritage, with stops also overseas. The event, now in its 28th edition of Open Monuments, is the richest ever, with the participation of 78 Municipalities, and will involve the city of Quartu Sant’Elena on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May, in the first opening weekend.

Open Monuments is created on a national basis by Imago Mundi OdV with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia – Department of Cultural Heritage and Department of Tourism -. As has happened continuously since 2008, the project also received the Representation Medal from the Presidency of the Italian Republic this year; the 2024 edition boasts the prestigious patronage of the Senate of the Republic, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Chamber of Deputies, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism. The patronage of the European Parliament should also be underlined.

The 2024 edition is entitled ‘Spaces for dreams’. We thus intend to propose and support the need to create physical and virtual spaces for the pursuit and realization of dreams, whether they have already materialized – therefore memory – or are to be realized – therefore evolution and future. The legacy, the memory of the narrated heritage is recognized here as a tool, a shared space where we can act together for the cultural, social, economic and environmental development of a territory and within which to respect those principles of sustainability and well-being which are at the center of contemporary commitment. It is the realization of someone’s dream that has become someone else’s, or rather others’, heritage.

This year Quartu will lead the way, participating in the event in the first weekend of the 2024 edition. The opening of 26 monuments of cultural interest is expected, including churches, archaeological sites, towers, forts and historic houses. A true journey through history, from the Nuraghic to our times, to discover the Quartu of other times and the path that led it to be what it is today. Always with the contribution of the many volunteers who participate in the initiative, with a constructive spirit and a lot of enthusiasm.

Open Monuments is for us a very welcome confirmation and a consolidated event that gives us the opportunity to make the cultural and artistic heritage of our city known to visitors and residents – explains Mayor Graziano Milia -. An essential showcase for Quartu Sant’Elena, which through this initiative reveals its roots by offering a new version of itself, within an engaging and unique path of rediscovery, capable of giving back to our community a deeper sense of belonging and of pride”.

Among the new features this year in the city is the opening of the parish of San Luca, on the Margine Rosso on the coastal coast. In various sites there will also be the possibility of taking guided tours in the Sardinian language, as well as in various foreign languages, from English to French, up to Spanish. The visit in Sardinian will be offered in the municipal library of via Dante and in the historical archive, curated by the students of IC n. 1, in the church of Sant’Agata, with the volunteers of Imago Mundi, in the small church of Bonaria ex Oratorio delle Anime, told by the Agesci 1 Scout Group, in Piazza Olla, thanks to the Marinai d’Italia association.
