In the Venetian basketball derby, Reyer Venezia took advantage of the home court advantage and beat Treviso 91-78. The lagoon team achieved the victory with a great team performance which satisfied coach Spahija at the end of the match. The Orogranata coach comments on the performance of his boys directly from the press room of the Taliercio sports hall.
Coach Neven Spahija:
“Congratulations to the team and the fans for this important victory. This evening we did well to obtain an important victory despite the many errors, such as turnovers. If only we hadn’t conceded 30 points to Treviso in the last quarter we would have made a perfect match.
We were good at scoring 91 points with many players, but I think there is still room for improvement given that we committed 15 turnovers. We hope that Parks’ injury is not serious and that Spissu can return soon from the fever that hit him today.”
In the first five minutes Treviso scored 17 points. What did he ask of his players?
“Lately our problem has been the defense. At the start of the match we were unable to contain Treviso’s attack. Once again in the season, at the start of the match we conceded many points to our opponents without committing a foul and this is an aspect which we will continue to work on.”
Was Parks a key player for this team today?
“In recent months we have won many games even without him because he was injured. I think he can be an extra for our team. This shows how our team is very deep.”
Did the audience support you from the first to the last minute this evening?
“Yes, the fans were extraordinary, but the team must also win other matches. I understood that today was a derby and the team gave a great performance also for the public. Now we can finally say that we are among the top four in the table and we have surpassed the points obtained last season. Today the team reacted after the two defeats in the championship and therefore we can work with less pressure for the end of the season.”
When Treviso went back to -10 you called a timeout, re-motivated the boys and did you finish the game?
“At that moment we made many individual mistakes in attack, while they punished us with three consecutive triples. Also because Treviso is a strong team and it was their great desire that made the difference in that moment.”
It was a great team performance. Besides this, what allowed you to make a difference?
“The defense was fundamental. For 70% of the game we played great defense. Then we did very well in rebounding and conceded a few offensive rebounds to Treviso and we dominated in rebounding 37-28.”
Did Casarin have another great performance this evening?
“He had a very positive performance, especially in defense and he is growing a lot.”
This evening you scored 44 points inside the area while you only conceded 22 to Treviso. By limiting Paulicap a lot?
“This was our preparation for the match. It is very difficult for them to defend against our players inside the area. So if you manage to win with a great balance between points in the area and outside the area, it means that you played very good basketball.”
Did the bench make a great contribution this evening, impacting the game very well?
“Now our bench is very strong. We are deep and despite Marco’s absence we managed to be very solid. Like this evening we must demonstrate great aptitude in playing together. Andrea De Nicolao did very well this evening with 8 personal assists. In total our ball handlers, Heidegger Casarin and De Nicolao made 15 assists overall and in total the team made 25. So it was a great performance from this point of view.”
