World Book Day, irises as a gift to those who purchase from independent bookstores in Florence
Descriptive text here

An iris as a gift to anyone who buys a book in independent bookstores in Florence on the occasion of World Book Day on Tuesday 23 April. It’s the initiative ‘Books flourish in Florence’, which returns for the fourth edition thanks to a consolidated group of 15 bookshops: Alfani, Alzaia, Claudiana, Farollo and Falpalà, Florida, Fortuna di Pontassieve, Francese, Leggermente, Menabò, Nani Pittori, On the road, L’Ornitorinco, Piccola pharmacy literarya, Todo Modo, Todo Modo dilà.

The project is inspired by the similar initiative of the booksellers Catalans who are giving away one on April 23rd rose for each book sold, continuing an ancient tradition of medieval origin.

World Book and Copyright Day was born under the aegis of UNESCO in 1996 to promote reading, the publication of books and the protection of copyright. April 23 was chosen because it is the date of the death of three writers considered pillars of universal culture: Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega.

The initiative ‘Books flourish in Florence’ is sponsored by the Municipality of Florence.
