Claudio’s tunnels, six extraordinary guided tours

AVEZZANO – There is a unitary interpretation that links the traditional and ancestral festival of Madonna of Pietraquaria and the cultural, historical and social rediscovery of Claudio’s tunnelsa mammoth work of hydraulic engineering of Roman origins, which has survived to the present day: it is the promotion of Avezzano as a cradle of culture and an excellent tourist destination.

The many and varied initiatives that will take place during the next Avezzano weekend aim at this objective, which will be entirely dedicated to the celebrations in honor of Maria di Pietraquaria, protector of the city. “From Friday 26 April to Sunday 28 – as underlined by the city councilor Alessandro Pierleoni – Claudio’s tunnels will be open again for guided and scheduled visits. The Municipality, in fact, also for this year, as already experienced last year and again in perfect synergy with the Superintendence, has drawn up a calendar of 3 days of visits, which will be added to the other 3 days of extraordinary openings of the site, organized by the Superintendency itself. In total, therefore, we are talking about 6 whole days of opportunities and possibilities to discover or rediscover the famous Tunnel, in view of the holiday dedicated to the patroness of Avezzano and the passage of the Giro d’Italia 2024 in the city in May”. The pre-established days for the guided tours, therefore, will be: next April 20th, April 26th, April 27th, April 28th, May 16th and, finally, May 25th.

“Always on the basis of last year’s experimentation, also for this spring – continues Pierleoni – we have involved professionals and tourist and cultural operators from our territory, such as the Antiqua cooperative, the Limes cooperative and the AmbeCò cooperative, precisely to give a qualified and complete with the many requests from visitors from Marsica, Abruzzo and those arriving from outside the region. For 2024, therefore, we are starting from a +1, given that this format was already validated last year and the experiment was a perfect success.” The idea of ​​the municipal administration, in fact, remains to create an ad hoc tourist package, which runs from April 25th, the day of the Liberation and the fair, and which reaches up to the 28th: ​​”A tourist package – concludes the municipal councilor – which includes and offers tourists from outside the unique magic of the Focaracci night, the religious rites and the timeless wonder immersed in the history of visits to the Cunicoli di Claudio”.
