TURIN – Some animal rights activists they turned to Tar Piedmont For counteract the decision of eliminate urban pigeons. Last February, the Council of the Metropolitan City of Turin adopted a plan that involves catching and killing pigeons both in urban and rural areas, with the support of hunters.

Animal rights associations denounce that, under the pretext of protecting agriculture, a massive killing of wild animals is about to take place, even in cities. The animals will be caught with traps and then killed. Land non-lethal solutions were not considered.

The organizations Lav, Oipa, Sos Gaia, Enpa, Pan and Pro Natura Torino, gathered in the Animals & Environment Table, have instructed the Fenoglio – Callegari law firm to present an appeal to the Regional Administrative Court against the Metropolitan City of Turin regarding the Plan of pigeon control for the period 2024/2029. The appeal highlights that the plan does not include bloodless and preventative methods, wrongly assuming their ineffectiveness. Furthermore, the plan does not guarantee that the killings are carried out while minimizing the pain and stress of the animals. The associations ask for the withdrawal of the Plan and a new discussion that includes animal protection organizations.
