Turnout and how to vote

In total, those entitled to vote in Basilicata are 567,959, of which 394,643 in the Potentino area and 173,316 in the Matera area: it is a number that goes well beyond the approximately 538 thousand Lucanians in the latest Istat census because this figure must include several thousand people who they live abroad. An element which, consequently, will have a decisive impact on turnout: in 2019 it reached 53.8%, up compared to 47.6 in 2013. In the 682 sections that will be set up (453 in the Potenza area and 229 in the Matera area) – and which also include four seats in hospital facilities (two in Potenza, one in Matera and one in Venosa) – 279,552 men and 288,407 women will have the right to vote. In the Potenza area there are 194,369 men and 200,274 women, while in the Matera area there are 85,183 men and 88,133 women. 258 people applied for the 20 councilor positions (one of which will be assigned to the gubernatorial candidate who comes second). Separate voting is not permitted, while it is possible to express a double gender preference.

Previous elections

In 2019, at the last Regionals, Bardi won with 42.2%, against 33.1% of Carlo Trerotola (candidate from the centre-left), while the M5S had reached 20.3% with Antonio Mattia. The first party was the M5S with 20.2, followed by the League with 19.2.

Regional with national weight

This is a regional election with national weight. So much so that even the national big names took to the field for the electoral campaign. The centre-left in Basilicata is aiming for a broad field but without Action and Italia Viva: after the fireworks that accompanied the choice of the gubernatorial candidate at the end of March, for several weeks the Lucanian electoral campaign of the Pd and M5S proceeded under the radar, crushed by the prospect of the importance of the European vote and by the clamor for the break in Bari. But for the final rush there was a two-day Lucanian show by Conte and then it was Elly Schlein’s turn in support of the dem gubernatorial candidate Piero Marrese. To close the campaign in the square in Potenza, for the outgoing Vito Bardi, the centre-right instead deployed the three leaders on the same stage: the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (FdI) and the deputy prime ministers Antonio Tajani (FI) and Matteo Salvini (Lega ).

The other Regionals of 2024

In 2024 this Lucanian election will be the third, after the victory of the centre-left in Sardinia with Alessandra Todde and the reconfirmation of Marco Marsilio of the centre-right in Abruzzo. In June, on election day with the European elections, we will vote in Piedmont, then towards the end of the year it will be the turn of Umbria, where the election date has not yet been established.
