Shipwreck 007, “unrecorded changes”: trial requested for the commander

Trial in sight for Claudio Carminati, the owner and commander of the boat with 21 agents of the Italian and Israeli secret services on board, which due to bad weather sank 16 meters into the waters of Lake Maggiore, off the coast of Lisanza (Varese) , last May 28th. There were 4 deaths, including Anya Bozhkova, 50 years old, of Russian origin, wife of Carminati, for whom, yesterday at the conclusion of the investigation, the request for indictment was formalized on charges of negligent disaster and multiple manslaughter . The other victims were Claudio Alonzi, 62, Tiziana Barnobi, 53, and Shimoni Erez, 54, Israeli. Alonzi and Barnobi belonged to the Italian secret services, Erez was ex-Mossad and that day the boat had been rented to celebrate his birthday. On board the “Gooduria” there were twenty-one 007s in total, in addition to Bozhkova and Carminati, who has always maintained that he did not know that the passengers on the boat were secret agents.

There are many reconstructions of what happened, however clarified by the expert report on the shipwreck, requested by the public prosecutor of Busto Arsizio, Massimo De Filippo, and drawn up by Carlo Ceccarelli (one of the experts who worked on the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia). Carminati underestimated the weather warning that day – claims the expert which indicated the arrival of a strong wave of bad weather. Not only that, the “artisanal” modifications that the captain made to the boat without ever recording them and, according to the expert probably, without ever evaluating their impact on the stability of the vessel, would be the causes of the shipwreck, in combination with the excess number of passengers present on the «Gooduria»: a total of 23 people including guests and crew against the expected maximum capacity of 15.

Even the additional 8, in the expert’s opinion, would have contributed to destabilizing the vessel. Boat which, moreover, turned out to be without insurance. The trial will then validate the expert opinion and the prosecution’s theses. While on the occasion of the birthday to be celebrated, the truth emerged only a few weeks ago, when the biography of Barnobi and Alonzi was made known, inserted on the Wall of Memory in the offices of Palazzo Dante, headquarters of the Dis, on the occasion of Remembrance Day to remember the fallen members of the secret services. The news is reported in the last five lines, identical for both agents: «He lost his life in the waters of Lake Maggiore on 28 May 2023, during the course of carrying out a delicate operational activity with Foreign Related Services».
