Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd all over the world. It is the largest environmental event on the planet, which has reached its 54th edition this year: the only moment in which all the towns and citizens of the world come together to celebrate the Earth and promote its protection. Born from a university movement and officially established on April 22, 1970, Earth Day involves up to a billion people in 192 countries around the world every year. EarthDay.org, global organizer of the Day, has indicated the theme “Planet vs. Plastics” for 2024 to call for “a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040 and the ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for future generations”.

Events in Rome

In Italy, Earth Day will be celebrated with numerous events throughout the Peninsula, some of which will also be organized by ASviS (the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development). The official Earth Day celebrations are already underway in Rome, as part of “The Village for the Earth”, the most popular environmental event in Italy organized by Earth Day Italia and the Focolare Movement. An event that involves students and families from all over Italy and which from 18 to 21 April will host more than 600 events, all free, organized by over 300 civil society organisations, institutions and sports federations. A program full of meetings, shows, talks and a village dedicated to the little ones with fun and educational workshops that will be held at the Terrazza del Pincio and at the Galloppatoio of Villa Borghese. Furthermore, on the weekend of 20 and 21 April, ASviS will hold a series of workshops at the Parco della musica Auditorium designed for schools and children between five and seven years old. The activities will focus on the ecological footprint, but there will also be activities dedicated to the sustainable development goals. Also in Rome will be held , The Multimedia Marathon, 16 hours of live content broadcast by the Fuksas Nuvola, live on RaiPlay and Vaticannews.va. “Let your heart beat again for the Earth!”, the slogan of the multimedia marathon which reached its fifth edition this year. In the evening there will be the historic Earth Day Italia Concert for the Earth from the Auditorium della Nuvola.

The celebrations in Turin

In Turin, at the Royal Museums, today, Saturday 20 April, at 9am, the AWorld and Club Silencio event dedicated to social and environmental sustainability will begin with talks, wellness activities, shows, workshops, exhibitions, screenings and laboratories for childhood and music. From 6pm, the central stage in Piazzetta Reale will come alive with a Concert for the Earth in which numerous male and female artists will take part and will entertain guests until late at night, with the aim of rethinking and bringing the theme of development to the stage sustainable and spread the message “Let’s protect the Planet, because we don’t have a Planet B”. The Italian celebrations this year will also become an integral part of the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment which will be held in Turin. From 28 to 30 April, in the Piedmontese capital two events dedicated to intercultural and intergenerational dialogue are scheduled, supported by the Piedmont Region and held in the Environment Park: “Peace and Environment, intercultural and interreligious dialogue”, with the involvement of religious and cultural leaders from different areas of the planet, and the “States General of the Environment for Young People”.

Other events not to be missed

Another event not to be missed on the occasion of Earth Day 2024 is the tenth edition of Earth Day Cefalù, scheduled from 20 to 25 April. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Cefalù with the patronage of Earth Day Italia, includes initiatives dedicated to nature, sport, art, leisure and entertainment for the little ones. Among the events, guided excursions in natural areas, creative workshops, theatrical performances, exhibitions and much more. In Milan, however, on 22 April, at the Piccolo Teatro Strehler, an event on the theme of pollution will be held on the initiative of the mayors of Milan, Bologna, Turin, Venice and Treviso. Enrico Giovannini, scientific director of ASviS, will also participate in the meeting. Events are also scheduled in Bologna. Also on 22 April, the Inequalities and Diversity Forum, the Italian Caritas and the National Office for Social Problems and Work (Italian Episcopal Conference) are organizing a conference on the just ecological transition with the participation of Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and the coordinator of the Dd Forum Fabrizio Barca.
