A surface area of 10 thousand square meters permanently modified through terraces more than 20 meters high. This is what the forestry Carabinieri discovered in the locality of Sant’Irene di Briatico, in the province of Vibo, as part of a monitoring activity aimed at safeguarding the landscape-environmental heritage on the coastal strip coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office led by Camillo Falvo. The military also used drones, discovering the elevation of the terraces and a significant change in the morphology of the places examined which had already been the subject of a preventive seizure last February.
The investigative activity continued while the alleged perpetrator continued to carry out, in the same area subject to landscape restrictions, massive excavation and earth moving work without any authorization having only presented a Cila to the Municipality of Briatico for leveling and removal of brushwood. The accusation was aggravated by the installation of iron posts and netting to support the raised areas, while soil removed from the slope upstream of the area close to the railway was used for filling. The alleged perpetrator of the environmental crimes also occupied the state-owned maritime area by placing large boulders located directly on the beach in contravention of the Navigation Code. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Vibo Valentia therefore requested and obtained a new preventive seizure issued by the investigating judge of the same Court for the area of approximately 10 thousand square meters.
