Mice in Molfetta, Pasquale Salvemini’s explanation: «Also the effect of rodent control»

In the last few days there have been many reports of rats around the city in Molfetta. From the seafront to the municipal villa, passing through the streets of the historic center and the nightlife: many citizens have expressed a certain discontent, also via social media, about this diffusion which lately seems to have become rampant.

Pasquale Salvemini of the Molfetta WWF centre, however, wanted to provide some clarifications in this regard: «I understand the discontent of those who certainly do not feel pleasure in seeing rodents in the street but, at the same time, it must be underlined that the most frequent encounter with these animals is linked precisely to rodent control. The very poison that is used to eliminate mice, in most cases, pushes them to carry out actions that tend to go against their nature such as, for example, going out during daylight hours or going to areas highly frequented by people”.

The ASM Molfetta, meanwhile, systematically checks the sewer manholes in order to continue the cleaning operations. Often the presence of rats is due to the state of abandonment of numerous petticoats, which are not cleaned by the owners and where the rodents proliferate in peace. But not only that, because another determining factor is the transgression of the rules on door-to-door collection, such as the failure to use tubs.

According to the findings provided in recent months by the municipal company, in fact, only 5% of the bait placed were eaten by rodents, who prefer the leftovers abandoned by uncivilized people on the streets every day to the morsel from the trap.
