The first workshop of the collaboration signed in 2023 between the National Research Council (CNR) and the Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), the German research center for Artificial Intelligence, concluded in the Research Area of ​​the CNR in Pisa. .

This first in-person meeting saw the participation of many researchers who are dictating the agendas in Italy and Germany of studies in the sector of Artificial Intelligence and its numerous applications.

Also present on the second day of work were the director of the DFKI, Antonio Krüger, the President of the Cnr Maria Chiara Carrozza and the director of the department of Engineering, Ict and technologies for energy and transport (Cnr-Diitet) Emilio Fortunato Campana, who the start of joint work was sealed.

Artificial Intelligence has been addressed from numerous multidisciplinary points of view. The goals achieved in the field of the most well-known uses of AI were presented, such as content generation systems, language learning and the mitigation of online disinformation, but also robotics, machine-human interaction and digital assistants, with insights into the possible risks and impacts on society. Large space dedicated to medicine and health issues, such as support for the diagnosis of tumors or degenerative diseases, or technologies capable of supporting human beings in their daily activities.

President Carrozza underlined the importance of strengthening Italy-Germany collaboration on issues of common interest and with broad social impact such as Artificial Intelligence, hoping that such opportunities can represent a first step towards a common European research infrastructure for ‘Artificial intelligence.

The workshop, organized by the director of the Institute of Information Science and Technologies (Cnr-Isti) Roberto Scopigno, in collaboration with Matteo Pardo of the Cnr’s International Relations Office, saw the participation of various institutes and laboratories. The researchers of the Institute of Computational Linguistics (Cnr-Ilc), of the Institute of Sciences and Technologies of Cognition (Cnr-Istc), of the Institute of Intelligent Industrial Systems and Technologies for Advanced Manufacturing (Cnr-Stiima) and the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (Cnr-Iit) and the Cnr-Isti, presented the most promising results of their research.

About twenty researchers participated, representing the German research centre. DFKI has more than 30 competence centers, departments and research laboratories across Germany and was established to develop and support safe and reliable Artificial Intelligence research in Germany and Europe.
