Snow returns to Calabria: a winter return in April

A wave of bad weather with snow hit Calabria, turning Sila Cosentina, Pollino and the peaks of Aspromonte white in late April.

REGGIO CALABRIA – A wave of bad weather with intense rainfall and snowfall has hit Calabria in late spring in recent days, whitening even the southernmost peaks of Aspromonte.
The heaviest snowfalls were recorded in Camigliatello Silano and Lorica, on the Cosenza side of the Sila plateau, where the snow reached up to 1,200 metres. White flakes also fell on the villages Mancuso and Racise, in Ciricilla and Villaggio Palumbo, in the Crotone area.
In the Reggio area, in Gambarie, on the Aspromonte, the snow returned with a spectacular snowfall this morning, Friday 19 April 2024. The temperature plummeted and the snow that was seen at 1,310 meters above sea level was the most abundant of the entire winter season.

The snow in Calabria and even more so in April is a real addition to winter for the region, with temperatures that have dropped by more than twenty degrees compared to a few days ago. The rain, at times intense, was the protagonist of these days, accompanied by a drastic drop in temperatures.
According to experts, the situation is not expected to change much in the coming days.
