Savona, 19 April 2024 – A shot put world class is expected in Savona for the 13th International meeting City of Savona.
The specialty, which has always been one of the strong points of the Challenger stage of the World Athletics Tour at the “Complesso Polisportivo Giulio Ottolia”, will also have some of the most important world performers on the stage on Wednesday 15 May (from 3.50pm to 6.50pm). Before the names, the numbers: in Savona there will be two of the top 10 weightlifters in the world ranking and six throwers with personal throwers over 21 meters.
Over all Leonardo Fabbrinow almost an “honorary citizen” of Savona: for the 27-year-old Florentine it will be the sixth consecutive participation in the meeting (for him the victory in 2020, second places in 2019 and 2023 and third place in 2021), with two very heavy medals in closer like the world silver medal in Budapest 2023 and the indoor world championship bronze won last March 1st (all four blue medalists from Glasgow will be in Savona: in fact Mattia Furlani has already been announced in the long run, Lorenzo Simonelli in the 110m hurdles and Zaynab Dosso in the 100m).
However, Fabbri’s relationship with the city of Savona goes beyond international competition: last year Leonardo was also the guest of a well-attended meeting with schools. However, with a personal 22.37 indoors, Fabbri does not have the longest throw of the Savona 2024 cast: in fact, he achieved 22.44 (best European throw from 1989 to today) Zane Weirthe blue training partner of the Tuscan (with the guidance of Paolo Dal Soglio) who boasts the 2023 European indoor title in his career and won the meeting last year with the event record of 21.60.
Four top-class pitchers will make the match even more qualified: the South African Kyle Blignaut, sixth at the Tokyo Games and 2018 Under 20 world champion (21.21 personal best); the Bosnian Mesud Pezernational record holder with 21.48 and fifth at an indoor world championship in 2018; Mohamed Magdi Hamza, Egyptian with 21.39 bronze at the last African Championships and twice silver at the African Games; the British Scott Lincolna personal best of 21.28 and a bronze at the last Commonwealth Games on the board.
