San Ferdinando has its own widespread art museum • Wonders of Calabria

The widespread art museum (Mad) is born in San Ferdinando. An innovative and dynamic project that supports a strong bond with the places of the city’s memory and which aims to enhance and promote the historical, artistic and cultural heritage of the city. It was the last city council meeting – that of Wednesday 17 April – with a unanimous face that gave birth to this new reality.

The widespread Mad-Museo of San Ferdinando does not end in its exhibition spaces but extends to the places of the city and invites the public to continue the visit in the urban fabric, exploring squares, streets, neighborhoods that tell the history and identity of the community . This unique journey between works of art and places of memory, intertwined with the signs of today’s art, represents a starting point for a minor history, capable of reconnecting with History with a capital letter, offering significant references to historical events cultural events of San Ferdinando and its openness to the contemporary.

Furthermore, the city municipal council also approved the Regulation which includes the “Development and Management Plan of the Widespread Art Museum”, regulating the governance of the Museum and including the mapping of the sites and places to be included in the museum itinerary, as well as the methods involving citizens and cultural operators.

The Municipality of San Ferdinando is committed to accrediting the Mad in the national museum system and to developing collaborations with public and private bodies. This commitment will translate into targeted investments to ensure the growth and development of the museum over time. A Scientific and Cultural Committee will also be established made up of experts in the sector, responsible for supporting and advising the Municipality in the management and development of the Widespread Museum. This multidisciplinary team will help ensure the excellence and quality of the museum’s activities.

Mad will promote awareness and dissemination initiatives aimed at actively involving citizens and visitors in the museum journey. Events, exhibitions, workshops and other cultural activities will be organized to stimulate participation and encourage dialogue around the culture and history of our city.

Among the works and sites of interest already cataloged are contemporary art installations such as “The Other Face” by Nelson Carrilho, Filo Rosso by Paola Grossi Gondi and the panels created by students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Reggio Calabria, in addition to the mural dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Riace Bronzes created by the young artists Iozzo and Neri.

Among the works of historical interest, the bronze statue dedicated to Vito Nunziante, created by Francesco Jerace whose work “Action” is part of the collection of the Vittoriano in Rome, the Church of the Pardon with its precious content of monumental tombs and other elements of of value, the apse fresco “The Conversion of San Ferdinando” by Giuseppe Armocida and many sites of interest such as the restoring “Convento”, the city churches, the Colonia Nunziante or the via Dogana, home to the finance offices already in the 19th century.

«The Mad-Museum of widespread art of San Ferdinando is ready to become a point of reference for the culture, memory and future of the city». This is what the Councilor for Culture Francesco Barbieri declared who, satisfied with the unanimous acceptance of his proposal in the City Council, reiterated «that safeguarding and preserving the memory and spreading knowledge of local history is a question of social awareness, not merely nostalgic. Opening up to the present with strong identity references means making the community aware of itself and its role in the territorial context and we are convinced that the function of art is fundamental in such a process”.
