Just 21 days after the event, the city of Vicenza is preparing to welcome the 95th National Alpine Gathering, an event that promises to be memorable for both the participants and the inhabitants. The flag raising ceremony, scheduled for Friday 10 May at 9am in Piazza dei Signoriwill mark the beginning of this three-day celebration which will culminate with the traditional parade on Sunday.
The impact of the event
The last event of this magnitude was held in 1991, and its return is strongly felt by both the community and the city administration. Mayor Giacomo Possamai highlighted not only the historical importance, but also the notable ones logistical inconveniences than a similar influx of visitorsestimated at approx 500 thousand, will result in the city of 110 thousand inhabitants. Despite this, the mayor invited everyone to collaborate to ensure that the event takes place in the best possible way, transforming it into an inclusive and participatory celebration.
During the press conference, it was underlined how the Alpine Gathering represents not only a moment of historical commemoration but also a significant economic opportunity. Previous studies by the University of Pavia have estimated the economic impact of the event at around 140 million euros. A new study, carried out by the University of Udine, will be presented on May 7th, promising to offer an updated and detailed vision of the economic effects of the event.
A message of peace in turbulent times
The president of the National Alpine Association (ANA), Sebastiano Favero, closed the conference by evoking the motto of this edition, “The Alpine troops’ dream of peace”. Favero linked the historical memory of past tragedies to the current situation of tensions in Europe and the Middle East, underlining the need for a renewed commitment to dialogue and mutual understanding between peoples. This message aims to echo the appeal for peace that characterizes the spirit of the Alpine troops, echoing the symbolic sacrifice represented by the shrines of Ortigara and Mount Grappa.
