Ismea, Institute of services for the agricultural food market, has published the monitoring of the cost of producing farm-gate milk in Tuscany.

The study shows that the production of bovine milk in our region is worth 52.34 million euros, approximately 9% of the value of livestock production and 2% of the entire agricultural economy of the region. A reality, which expresses production volumes of a certain importance, with milk deliveries which last year stood at a level of just under 55 thousand tonnes, down by more than 5% compared to 2022.

The negative dynamics of milk production were mainly affected by the increases in raw materials and, in general, in total production costs which, according to monitoring carried out by Ismea, amount to just over 53 euros/100 liters (excluding VAT ), based on the analysis of the economic accounts of medium-large farms which represent 36% of the dairy cattle present in the region.

From the agri-food department, thanking Ismea for the work done, they maintain that this is the first step towards a fair recognition of the value of protection for Tuscan livestock companies which are experiencing a moment of great difficulty but whose commitment is high and constant on all fronts. And in this regard, we underline the commitment to animal welfare on which Tuscan farmers are focusing, supported by the Region, and which requires a significant organizational effort. It will be necessary to do everything possible to ensure that in the chain that goes from producer to consumer, a product of value for the territory and for businesses such as milk does not leave the stables for a few cents and then end up at the consumer for over 2 euros. The regional department will fight on this together with agricultural organizations to ensure that the good milk of Tuscany is protected.

The latest monitoring update shows that just under a third of production costs are attributable to food costs, considering both purchased and self-produced fodder and feed.

A cost item that in the last two years has been characterized by strong volatility, partly due to the geopolitical tensions still ongoing, partly due to the climatic adversities that have impacted both yields in the field and productivity in the stables.
