For the first time since 2016, Calabria is the Italian region most affected by acts of intimidation against mayors, councilors, city and municipal councilors, regional administrators, public administration employees, recorded by Notice Public in its annual report on “Administrators under fire” . There are 51 cases registered in the Calabrian territory (+21% compared to 2022), the only one of the four regions in which the so-called historical mafias were born to record an increase in cases. Followed by Campania (39 cases, -20%), Sicily (35 cases, -30%) and Puglia (32 cases, -33%): together they account for 50% of the acts of intimidation recorded last year overall. the national territory. Tuscany (20 cases) is the most affected region in the central-northern area, the same number recorded in Sardinia: for both there is an increase of more than 20% in registered cases compared to 2022. Lombardy and Veneto close the top 10 positions (19 cases), Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna (17). After many years, Naples (21 cases registered) leaves the unenviable record of the most affected province on the national territory to Cosenza, where 30 acts of intimidation were recorded in 15 different municipal areas. In the provincial ranking, Palermo (12), Turin, Foggia and Reggio Calabria (9) follow.
Every 28 hours an administrator in Italy receives a threat. The victims are mostly mayors, councilors, city and municipal councilors, representatives of regions or public administration employees. In 2023 there were 315 intimidations, which however shows a decrease of 3.5% compared to 2022 (326), far from the peak recorded in 2018 (574), therefore with a total that fell by almost half (-45% ).

21% in Municipalities dissolved due to the mafia

21% of the 315 cases of threats to local administrators recorded by Notify Pubblico in the 2023 report occurred in Municipalities which in a more or less recent past were dissolved due to mafia infiltration. These acts of intimidation involved 42 municipalities: 14 in Campania, 10 in Calabria, 10 in Sicily, 5 in Puglia and 3 in other regions. Small municipalities are most affected: in 55% of cases these are municipalities with less than 20 thousand inhabitants, in 19% of cases municipalities with between 20 thousand and 50 thousand inhabitants and in 26% of cases municipalities with more than 50 thousand inhabitants.
