The analysis of the QS ranking by subject 2024, the world ranking that evaluates universities based on individual disciplines, shows all the strengths and weaknesses of our academic world.
In the Italian ranking, the University of Pavia takes first place as the worst university in the arts and humanities. The category includes subjects such as Literature, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Archaeology, Music. Next, in the ranking of the worst, we find the European University Institute of Florence and, closing the podium, the University of Genoa.
Moving on to a more scientific side, such as Engineering and Technology, the Polytechnic of Bari, the University of Pavia and the University of Genoa are on the podium of the three worst Italian universities in subjects such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, mechanical or chemical engineering.
The broad subject area of life sciences and medicine includes nine individual subjects, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, anatomy, biological sciences and veterinary sciences. The title of worst university relating to this thematic area was awarded to the University of Catania, followed by the University of Perugia and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The broad thematic area of natural sciences which, however, includes nine subjects, including chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics, has the podium of the worst Italian subjects, occupied by the University of Perugia, followed by that of Palermo and that of Catania.
To conclude, the ranking analyzed the area of social sciences and management which includes 16 different subjects, including business, law, politics and economics. And in this case it is the city of Pisa that stands out, with two negative results: the University of Pisa and the Sant’Anna – Scuola Universitaria Superiore.
