TRIESTE Helping the surgical children of Burlo is the main prerogative of Abc – the Association for the surgical children of Burlo – which since 2005 has never stopped raising funds to help families and minors who need specific medical care. Now Abc can count on an important economic resource raised by the Mediolanum Bank and Foundation amounting to 148 thousand euros, which will be used to supporting 800 surgical children thanks to the “Little Big Dreams” charity initiative. After a first donation in 2019 for the “Come una casa” project, the partnership between ABC and Mediolanum is renewed to better address the complex paths that many children from all over Italy and abroad have to face.
The check was delivered at the Confindustria Trieste headquarters in the presence of the president of ABC Giusy Battainthe director of the pediatric surgery department at Burlo Jurgen Shleefthe vice president of Mediolanum bank Sara Doris and the ABC psychologist Angela Camelio. «Receiving this donation – said Battain – is a very great support for ABC: it allows us to invest in increasingly cutting-edge equipment and for the training of psychologists and volunteers who are the cornerstones of our project».
The support was possible thanks to a fundraiser signed by Mediolanum customers who between October and December 2023 contributed to the donation in favor of three Italian associations that operate in pediatric hospitals in Genoa, Naples and Trieste, for a total of over 400 thousand euros divided into equal parts.
The objectives that Abc wishes to achieve include continuous psychological support after prenatal diagnosis with the presence of a psychotherapist alongside the family before, during and after surgery to help parents manage stress and create trust in doctors who operate on children.
The amount will also be invested in specialized instrumentation for the Irccs Burlo Garofolo, to provide the hospital with the best technology to make operations less invasive. Even daily activities within the department, such as games and interactions, will enjoy continuous support to guarantee the emotional support that helps children cope with the hospitalization period.
To underline the delicate work of ABC and demonstrate the union between doctors, department and association, she spoke during the ceremony Francesca Platanimother of Luca who underwent surgery six years ago at Burlo Garofolo because he was born with club feet.
«Today Luca is well – says Platani – thanks to the delicacy and support shown in the great professionalism of all of you together».
At the end of the meeting, ABC wanted to donate a plaque to the Mediolanum Foundation in recognition of the gesture received. «Being able to be useful to others – underlines Doris – is an immense grace which in this experience represents the best of human strength. We have a special bond with ABC and I am grateful for the beauty they are capable of creating with every family that needs financial, but above all emotional, support.”
