‘Ndrangheta in Crotone, the meeting of entrepreneurs who denounced the clans in the Prefecture

CROTONE «I had lost faith in the State but I had to change my mind because I found exceptional police forces. In particular the Crotone Police Headquarters, both from a professional and human point of view. They have always been close to us. Then the closeness of the people: there was an awareness of the people; I had never seen a reaction like that in 50 years. It’s time to persist, not to give up. Because if we give up we’ve wasted time. There’s no need to build bridges. The main problem is the ‘Ndrangheta, which has jeopardized everything and can jeopardize the future if we don’t take action.”
This was said by Rosario Mattace, an entrepreneur from Cutro who denounced his extortionists, during the initiative on the theme “Sotto Scacco”, a discussion on racketeering and extortion organized by “Crotone Imprese”. Mattace, thanks to his complaints, made it possible to launch an operation in which five alleged affiliates of Cutro’s ‘Ndrangheta were arrested. Prefect Maria Grazia Nicolò, Extraordinary Government Commissioner for the coordination of anti-racket and usury initiatives, took part in the initiative.
«We are here – said the prefect Nicolò – to promote the culture of denunciation. And also to encourage all those who are harassed by crimes attributable to organized crime to somehow raise their heads and regain possession of their personal dignity, not to be bowed down by organized crime and to regain their personal freedom and their freedom of business. The frequent judicial police operations reveal the existence and persistence of usury and extortion crimes, but there is no collaboration from entrepreneurs and traders and we have a decline in complaints. We need to understand that the essential fulcrum is denunciation and in this sense we must shake up entrepreneurs. I came to Crotone to try in some way to inform entrepreneurs and traders about the opportunity that the State gives when you decide to report.” The prefect Nicolò, in reiterating the role of the anti-racket associations, «who know – he said – the territorial humus of reference and can accompany the victim by inducing him to report because it is necessary to promote also in the Crotone area a form of associationism in support and benefit of who reports.
