BUSTO ARSIZIO – They were 80, out of 114, children who gave up lunch in the canteen at the primary school in via Comerio in Sant’Anna. And the first act of the “canteen strike” proclaimed by the parents’ committee to protest against the increases in meal vouchers that will start from the 2024-2025 school year, when the service will cost 6.30 euros per day compared to the current 5.80 and the 50% discount for the second child registered in the canteen will no longer apply. Meanwhile the opposition is also moving, with a motion presented by Emanuele Fiore of the mixed group.
The strike in Sant’Anna
Meal cancellation worked. More than two thirds of the registered children participated at Sant’Anna primary school, a tangible sign that parents are revolting against the increases. The strike consists in canceling meals in the canteen, which forces parents to pick up the kids at noon to take them home to eat and then bring them back to school when lessons resume in the afternoon, at two o’clock. Among the parents of via Comerio there is no intention of stopping: the strike will continue because it is not intended to be just a demonstrative gesture, but the objective is at least obtain permission to bring lunch from home, but also raise the issue of service quality. «The mayor come and listen to our reasons» the invitation addressed by the representatives of the parents’ committee to the mayor Emanuele Antonelli.
The cost increases
Meanwhile, the municipal councilor of the mixed group Emanuele Fiore has done the math on the canteen cost which will come into force from September 2024. The cost of the meal voucher will pass from 1.50 euros to 1.80 for those with an ISEE of less than 6000 euros and from 5.80 euros to 6.30 for other families, while the reductions, which were 50% for the second child and free from the third onwards, become 50% for the third child and 75% from the fourth onwards. «The expense – explains Fiore – with two children goes from 8.70 euros to 12.60 euros with an increase of 45%, with three children it goes from 8.70 euros to 15.75 euros with an increase of 81%with four children goes from 8.70 euros to 17.30 euros with doubling the expense”.
The motion
«It’s unworthy to cash in on children» Fiore thunders. One problem above all for those who have chosen full time for their children (40 hours) which includes the obligation to use the canteen service. The councilor of the mixed group writes this in a motion in which he asks the administration to «justify the increase of 0.50 cents in consideration of the fact that it is not attributable to the Euroristorazione concessionaire”, but also to “review the reductions for do not penalize, but rather facilitate, large families and allow those who do not have economic possibilities not to benefit from the canteen service”.
