Acer and Stress together to create reliable and sustainable homes

ACERRA. An entire building as a technology demonstrator for reliable and sustainable housing. The protagonist is the city of Acerra where solutions are developed and tested to be applied for the renovation of existing buildings and on newly constructed buildings. A pilot project that has also started in the Netherlands and Romania.

This is what the Multicare project achieves, funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, which is transferring innovation to the housing sector by testing technological solutions on an entire building that is part of Acer’s building heritage.

The demonstration activities are coordinated by the Stress sustainable construction technology district, which is also involved, together with Acer technicians, in the data collection and survey of the typological characteristics of the buildings. The project involves the Department of Structures of the Federico II of Naples, the Sapienza of Rome, the project coordinator, the Delft Polytechnic (TUDelft) and other partners.

The innovative technological solutions that are adopted consist of multifunctional systems for interventions on existing buildings that have both structural and energy efficiency functions. These are modular and prefabricated solutions that can also be applied to existing structures through minimally invasive external interventions with minimal impact on residents or without having to relocate the inhabitants and intervene from the outside. These are real adaptable wooden exoskeletons.

The delegations of international experts participating in the project met in Naples (at the Acer headquarters and the S. Giovanni della Federico II complex) for two days of intense work, dedicated to the implementation of an important efficiency project that will revolutionize the life in public housing. In fact, the use of the wooden exoskeleton on the building identified in Acerra increases stability and offers the possibility of expanding existing apartments without resorting to demolition and reconstruction.

Multicare solutions will be demonstrated through large-scale pilot projects in three different European countries: Italy, the Netherlands and Romania.

In Italy the chosen demonstrator site is Campania and concerns a building from Acer’s building heritage in the municipality of Acerra.

The applicability of these solutions, and the related impacts, will also be evaluated on other adjacent buildings or in the same area (neighborhood or municipality). Subsequently, the applicability to larger areas of the regional territory will be assessed both on the basis of the data available from Acer and on the basis of other statistical data relating to the regional building stock.

The demonstrator we use for the project –says the president of Stress, Ennio Rubino (in the photo)– it is an example of tangible innovation applied to the construction sector which remains in the area, contributing to its growth and valorisation. The work carried out with the team of experts allows us to improve the performance of individual buildings and increase resilience on an urban scale through sustainable and cutting-edge technologies that can be applied on a much larger scale with significant territorial impacts. This opportunity allows, on the one hand, to raise the quality level of planning in public administration by providing immediate and direct access to technologies in the development and validation phase, and on the other to compete on an equal footing with other European realities, in a network of good technological innovation practices, cutting edge from a structural, architectural and building sustainability point of view. Added to this is the added value that additional funding sources are being optimized compared to the regional budget, to contribute to overall territorial development”.

Acer played a key role in facilitating this important meeting and ensuring effective cooperation between all partners involved in the project,” underlines David Lebro. “The Multicare project represents Acer’s concrete commitment to promoting the sustainability and safety of its building heritage, offering the inhabitants of Acerra a safer and more comfortable environment. We are thrilled with the progress made so far and look forward with confidence towards the realization of this ambitious goal.”
