Ranieri had already won the award dedicated to Gigi Simoni two seasons ago and succeeds Stefano Pioli. The San Siro Tower was presented to the Cagliari coach in Milan, a symbol – underlines the Lega Serie B – “of an award inspired by the most sincere values of football, values of fair play that Ranieri has always represented”. “It is an enormous satisfaction to receive the Gentleman coach award in the name of Gigi Simoni, a great man. Receiving awards voted by the coaches themselves is always nice and fills me with pride. Let fair play live because we need these values, great correctness”, said Ranieri, who received compliments from the president of Lega B, Mauro Balata:
“Claudio Ranieri is a point of reference for young footballers and young coaches but above all he is a disseminator of the best values of sport – said Balata -. In a world where conflicts and arguments are often fueled, people like Simoni and Ranieri are points of reference and they constitute an example of the best sporting values for everyone. We are happy to have established this award in memory of a great person and to present it to those who deserve it.” His Serie B colleagues chose Ranieri “not only for having managed to bring Cagliari back to Serie A but also for the lesson in great sportsmanship given in the playoff final with Bari, resolved in the recovery in favor of the Sardinians: the coach had asked for and obtained by its fans to stop the insults and applaud the fans of the Apulian team, showing great respect for the opponents and encouraging sportsmanship between the two teams”.
