Giarre and its surroundings mourn the principal Girolamo Barletta

There is unanimous condolence in Giarre and the surrounding area for the passing, at the age of 92, of the principal Girolamo Barletta, a man of school, scholar, politician, journalist and writer, but above all a man who was known for his many activities by everyone, so everyone has their own personal memory of Principal Barletta. Precisely because of his many activities in the cultural, political and social fields, it is difficult to draw an exhaustive profile.

Principal Barletta was born in Linguaglossa on 29 April 1931. Graduated in Literature from the University of Catania, he first taught in Riposto and then in Giarre. He was principal of a lower middle school in Castiglione, Linguaglossa, Aci Catena, Riposto and Giarre. From 1974 to 1998 he was principal of the Amari high school and fought strenuously to maintain its autonomy. He had been retired since 1998.

A journalist, he collaborated with the newspaper La Sicilia and was also director of the Gazzettino di Giarre for some years.

The Municipality of Giarre awarded him honorary citizenship. Barletta in Giarre had been a municipal councilor in the 1970s, group leader of the DC, then councilor during the Sodano union.

The Municipality of Riposto also awarded him honorary citizenship in 2021: Barletta had been a municipal councilor in Riposto in the 1960s, group leader of the Christian Democrats.

He was a founding member of the Giarre Society of History, Homeland and Culture of Giarre, which he then presided over, also co-founder of the Unitre Salvatore Incorpora of Linguaglossa, among the founding members of the Kiwanis Giarre-Riposto, director of the Confraternity of Sant’Egidio abbot of Linguaglossa.

A scholar above all of popular traditions, his publications are numerous, including habits and customs of the people of Etna (first and second edition) which can be consulted in the municipal library. Barletta also made television programs in which he talked about local traditions.

The funeral will be celebrated on Thursday at 3.30 pm in the Mother Church in Giarre. The condolences of the owners and the entire editorial staff of Gazzettinonline go to his wife Maria and daughter Rosaria.
