The Sant’Elia hospital in Caltanissetta will be the fourth polyclinic in Sicily. The agreement between the Region and the University of Palermo was published in the Official Gazette which sees Caltanissetta as an ideal place with the right requirements – since its hospital is a level II DEA – to host the fourth polyclinic in Sicily. “It is an important result of our entire city, which has mobilized for this objective as has not happened for decades, with the massive participation of young students, who took to the streets in their thousands, of the Mayors of the entire province, of the Church of Nisse and of the world of associations and volunteers who were able to present to the regional government the will and determination to relaunch, with the university project, the quality of services and the development of an entire territory”. This was stated by the outgoing mayor Roberto Gambino.

The mayor of Nisse explained that the protocol provides for the management of 350 beds by the University of Palermo, which has chosen to place them at the S. Elia hospital, formerly DEA level II, unique in non-metropolitan cities in Sicily, here in Caltanissetta, where for over 20 years there has been a highly accredited degree course in Medicine and Surgery, already supported by Nursing Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and, for the next academic year, by a new degree course in Pharmacy and from one in Medicine to Technology.

“The Municipality – he commented – has always supported the University project with determination, with substantial economic investments and availability of structures and services, often the only institution to shoulder the burdens, convinced as we are that quality is health services and the presence of ‘Universities can be crucial for the development of our territory, its professionalism and related activities that can involve all sectors of our local economy.”

Continuing his discussion, Gambino concluded by reiterating: “We are increasingly convinced that the best results can only be achieved by strengthening the mechanisms of the vast area, strategically uniting the provinces of Caltanissetta, Agrigento and Enna and above all by uniting citizens and institutions , without distinction of political colour, without exploitation for partisan interests, without building virtual visibility on citizens’ problems, but committing together with others to solve them”.
