The two managers of E.On for the Sassari Appeal judges are not responsible for the pollution caused by the spill of 36 thousand liters of fuel oil in 2011.

The Court of Appeal of Sassari, confirming the first degree sentences, this morning acquitted the former managers of the E.on power plant in Fiume Santo, Marco Bertolino and Salvatore Signoriello, accused for environmental pollution due to the spillage of 36 thousand liters of fuel oil into the sea. An oil spill that hit the Gulf of Asinara in January 2011, polluting the coasts of northern Sardinia, from Stintino to Santa Teresa di Gallura.

THE judges considered valid the verdicts with which the Court of Sassari, in 2018, had considered the two managers not responsible for the breakage of a pipeline that conveyed fuel to the power plant and which caused the polluting material to be discharged into the sea. Bertolino, who had been judged with a summary trial at first instance, was therefore acquitted “because the fact does not exist”.

Signoriello, for whom the Prosecutor’s Office had not obtained an indictment, was confirmed with the sentence of “no place to proceed”. The Ministry of the Environment, the Municipality of Porto Torres, the WWF, and the Tuteliamo il Golfo dell’Asinara committee were civil parties in the proceedings, respectively represented by the lawyers Francesco Caput, Fabrizio Bionda, Gianmichele Sideri and Pina Zappetto. There will be no appeal to the Court of Cassation because the statute of limitations has expired on the contested crimes.
