Futura News at the Perugia Journalism Festival

Everything is ready for the Perugia International Journalism Festival, which for 18 years has attracted the most prominent protagonists in the world of culture and information to the Umbrian capital. From Wednesday 17th to Sunday 21st April, almost 600 speakers and guests will crowd Corso Vannucci and the historic center of the Umbrian city, animating the over 200 scheduled events. Like every year, the international event founded in 2006 by Arianna Ciccone and Christopher Potter will try to provide food for thought on the challenges and urgencies of the present through the lens of journalism.

The complexity of war, from the Middle East to Ukraine, with the voices and testimonies of the protagonists of information: the Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza; the director of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Hanin Majadli; the editor of the Ukrainian newspaper Ukrainska Pravda, Sevgil Musaieva; and also well-known names of Italian journalism such as Nello Scavo, Francesca Mannocchi, Paolo Giordano and Cecilia Sala.

From conflicts to attempts to find solutions through the exercise of democracy: from America to Asia to the European Union, in 2024 half of the world’s population will be called to the polls and information workers will have the task of reporting on the path towards voting and the impact that electoral choices may have in global balances. Among others, Preethi Nallu, Lih Yi Beh, Ros Atkins, Gianfranco Pasquino, Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa and Paul Caruana Galizia, son of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia killed in 2018 for her investigations into Maltese corruption, will talk about it. In reference to media rightsLotfullah Najafizada will report a story of censorship from Afghanistan while the Belarusians Aleksandra Pushkina and Nasta Rouda will tell the experience of Zerkalo.io and Nasha Niva, their publications forced “into exile”.

The 2024 edition of the IJF will dedicate ample space toartificial intelligence: from the functioning of neural networks to the risks and challenges for journalism, Christina Elmer, Julia Angwin, Dhruv Mehrotra and Nicholas Diakopoulos will touch on various aspects of AI, providing the Perugia audience with the opportunity to reflect on one of the main sectors towards which it is also directing technological evolution in the field of communication.

Also the climate and theenvironment will have a central role in the busy program of events scheduled until Sunday: a focus on the South of the world, with Anton Delgado, Gustavo Faleiros, Josiane Kouagheu and Andrés Bermúdez Liévano will alternate with a panel dedicated to the way in which journalism addresses and reports the climate crisis, chaired – among others – by Anne Koch and Amy Westervelt. Also present is Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, who will dialogue with the climate journalism expert, Stella Levantesi.

Among the hot topics of this edition of the Festival there will also be the debate around female condition, which will range from society to politics, also touching on language, culture and legality: Vera Gheno, Donata Columbro, Sara Hejazi, Mostafa Khosravi, Farian Sabahi, Matteo Bussola and Lorenzo Gasparrini will take turns in the various locations of the IJF, bringing food for thought and concrete testimonies on one of the most sensitive topics in public debate. Perugia will also host an interesting debate on queerness, an opportunity to denounce racism and promote a narrative aware of the many human differences which, even today, are subject to discrimination (also) in the media. Giulia Blasi, Karma_B, Karima Moual and Pasquale Quaranta will talk about it.

But the themes at the center of the International Journalism Festival do not end here: from activism to sovereign movements, from music to physics, passing through youth issues, politics and healthcare. The editorial team of Futura News will follow the Festival from the heart of Perugia, following panels and events every day, reporting them on the website and on social media with live updates and interviews with the protagonists.
