Free from plastic: scheduled events – Pescara

MARTINSICURO. Abruzzo, an increasingly plastic-free region, is preparing for a series of weekends of initiatives to protect its most beautiful and at the same time most threatened places by certain champions of incivility. We start from the next weekend of April 20-21 dedicated to “Earth Day” announced by the UN, this year focused on the theme “Planet vs Plastic”. On Saturday 20th the Plastic Free volunteers will be in the Teramano and Chietino areas in Torano Nuovo, Tortoreto, Silvi, Roseto degli Abruzzi and Vasto. Sunday 21st, however, in Capistrello, San Salvo and Francavilla al Mare and with a double appointment in Pescara city.
In the first months of 2024, the Abruzzo region intensified its activities to raise awareness and combat plastic pollution. As many as 27 events were held in schools which allowed 1,243 students to be reached. The initiatives then continued in public areas, including beaches and parks, with 7 environmental cleanups in which volunteers managed to remove 3 tons of waste from the environment.
These are the first results of the new year achieved in Abruzzo by Plastic Free Onlus, the voluntary organization committed since 2019 to combating the abuse of plastic, especially single-use, and the related pollution that damages nature and jeopardizes the health of man.
«Increasingly ambitious objectives that we are able to achieve thanks to the synergy and collaboration between volunteers and institutions, first and foremost», he declares Luca Di Carlantonio38 years old, married and father of two young children, geologist by profession and high school science teacher, recently appointed Plastic Free Onlus regional representative for Abruzzo.
«The objective we set ourselves with the entire group of Plastic Free representatives from Abruzzo is to increase the number of virtuous municipalities worthy of obtaining our coveted recognition: in Milan, nine received it on 9 March. This will mean”, adds Di Carlantonio, “that more and more citizens will be reached by raising awareness on environmental issues thanks to institutional activity and we will, at the same time, have cleaner, more livable and welcoming cities and territories”.
Di Carlantonio, Martinsicuro activist, has been in Plastic Free since August 2020 and takes over the baton from Maria De Gaetano. Many memoranda of understanding have been signed and activities in schools, especially in Val Vibrata. His commitment now shifts to the entire Region. (cs)
