Day of Food and Wine Excellence: Vinitaly in the Umbria Pavilion

A day full of food and wine and cultural events celebrates the winemaking and culinary excellence of Umbria, from Regional Winemaking to Slow Food products.

On the second day of Vinitaly, the Umbria Pavilion hosted a series of unmissable events that celebrated the food and wine excellences of the region. The Events Area was the beating heart of the activities, starting the day with the presentation of the winners of the Regional Wine Competition ‘L’Umbria del Vino’, organized by Promocamera Umbria. Divided into 10 categories, 166 wines from 61 wineries faced the judgment of a jury directed by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella.

Immediately afterwards, attention shifted to the ‘Wines and words’ meeting, an exploration of the wine denominations of Umbria led by the food and wine journalist Antonio Boco and the actor Gianluca Foresi, organized by Assogal.

Lunch was a moment of tasting and culinary recognition thanks to the ‘Elementi Fine Dining’ restaurant, awarded the 2024 Michelin Star. Chef Andrea Impero delighted those present with his historic dish ‘PORCO TONNO’, a work of art culinary which saw Porco Cinturello Orvietano meet the resources of the regional Agrobiodiversity register.

The synergy between cinema and wine was explored in the meeting ‘Paths and Flavors of Cinema’, organized by the Tourism Department of the Umbria Region. Thanks to the support of the network of Umbrian film festivals, fans were able to enjoy a unique sensorial experience, with free screenings, meetings with actors and directors in the prestigious Umbrian wineries.

In the afternoon, attention was focused on the Events Area with ‘A sip, a bite’, organized by 3A Parco Tecnologico Agroalimentare dell’Umbria. Here, the peculiarities of the vines registered in the Regional Biodiversity Register were enhanced through agrobiodiversity tastings, underlining the perfect combination of food and wine.

At the Umbria Wine Academy, several meetings explored the characteristics of Umbrian wine, including ‘Umbria Slow: nature, wine and authenticity’, organized by Federalberghi, UmbriaSì and Umbria & Bike. This event explored the affinities between slow tourism and the wine sector, offering a unique experience of taste and culture in the Green Heart of Italy.

A highlight was the presentation of Vinosanto from Smoked Grapes from the Upper Tiber Valley, a Slow Food product tasted in combination with blue cheeses, representing a unique sensorial experience.

The Ethical Cellars had the opportunity to present themselves to the public, illustrating their ‘Raison d’Étre’ and offering a guided tasting of their wines.

The ‘A Day in the Cellar’ project made it possible to get to know the new experimental ‘Montecristo’ cellar, led by Prof. Riccardo Cotarella, located inside the 16th century Montecristo Abbey, with the aim of becoming a center of excellence for enhance Umbrian oenology.

Finally, the panel ‘Simplifying Agricultural Policies: Comparing Regions’ offered an in-depth look at the simplification of agricultural policies, followed by artistic performances.

The Consorzio Tutela Vini Amelia closed the day by presenting its quality wines, offering stories and tastings in the company of local producers.
