A doctor last Saturday it was attacked twice, by two patientswhile he was on duty in the emergency room of polyclinic Of Foggia, on the night shift. The hospital itself communicated this in a note.

“A doctor on duty on the night shift – reconstructs Paola Caporaletti, director of the emergency room – was physically attacked by an agitated patient who even received support from his wife. In her statement, the doctor reconstructed what happened. The patient punched her in the face causing various bruises and breaking her glasses: her prognosis, at the moment, is ten days. The police also intervened on site. Shortly before, the health worker had suffered an attack by another patient.”

What happened

“The doctor is extremely damaged both physically and psychologically and in these hours she is questioning the possibility of continuing to work as a doctor” added Caporaletti in reference to the doctor attacked on Saturday evening in the emergency room in Foggia . The unfortunate woman preferred not to make any statements personally but conveyed all her bitterness to the director. “In this climate – continues Caporaletti – it has become impossible to continue working in the profession”. The doctor who was attacked twice last Saturday – once verbally and the second also physically with a punch in the face – has great experience. You have been serving in the emergency room and ASL 118 station for over twenty years and you know the dynamics of emergency situations well.

“It is truly a sad situation. These continuous attacks – continues Caporaletti – lead more and more doctors to move away from the public service, a bastion of civilization envied by other nations. By doing so, patients will soon find that emergency room door closed due to the absence of doctors. It is a collapsing system which, if it continues like this, risks definitive collapse”, concludes the director of the emergency room.

“I express closeness and solidarity – says the general director of the polyclinic, Giuseppe Pasqualone – to the doctor who was the victim of an attack while serving in the emergency room. Any inconvenience cannot justify acts of verbal and physical violence. We remember that in the event of injuries, even minor, now we can proceed automatically, regardless of the victim’s desire to file a complaint”.
