Gladiator 2, a first look at Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal in Ridley Scott’s film

Set 30 years after the events of the first film, Gladiator 2 will follow the path of the young Lucio Vero (Paul Mescal), son of Lucinda (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), as he tries to discover the identity of his real father and his origins. After the death of Commodus and Maximus, Lucilla sent her son to Africaaway from the influence of the Roman Senate and the corrupt nobility of the Empire, believing they were protecting it.

Its history takes place during the reign of Caracalla (Joseph Quinn), known for his role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things and who seems inclined to rival the cruelty that Commodus had in the first film. Neither Gladiator 2 Derek Jacobi will also return in the role of Senator Gracchus, Djimon Honsouwhile among the new entries we will have Denzel Washington, Mescal, Quinn e Pedro Pascal.

The first images spread by Vanity Fair show the new cast’s look and a first look at Lucilla Connie Nielsen: in some shots we can see Paul Mescal fight in a bloody arena against Pedro Pascal (who will be a former military commander enslaved and forced to fight as a gladiator). But we also have an unrecognizable Joseph Quinn with blonde hair in the role of Emperor Caracalla, while Denzel Washington He is a powerful and wealthy merchant who has freed himself from the yoke of slavery.

Ridley Scott revealed that he had chosen Paul Mescal for the lead role after seeing him in the acclaimed miniseries Normal People and requesting an interview over Zoom while he was busy performing at the theatre in London with A Streetcar Named Desire:

“I met him and he said, ‘Sure, I’d love to do it.’ And that was it: we were ready and off we went, it was a special meeting. It was absolutely perfect.”

On the plot of the film, Paul Mescal revealed to Vanity Fair to have understood much more beyond the clang of weapons, beyond the clashes in the arena and the corrupt politics of the Roman Empire:

“It’s about what humans are willing to do to survive or to win. […] Where is the space for humanity, love, family ties? You wonder if they will eventually prevail over greed and power. These are conflicts that frequently accompany human history”
