I am appeared in public for the first time, since their daughter, Kate Middleton, announced she had cancer. The parents of the Princess of Wales, Carole and Michael, joined her son-in-law, Prince William, and members of the royal family on the second day of the most anticipated equestrian event, the Royal Ascot. Prior to this, the last time they appeared in public was last December, when they attended Kate’s annual carol concert at Westminster Abbey.
Michael, 74, and wife Carole, 69, at Berkshire Racecourse joined the other guests: William’s cousins Zara and her husband Mike Tindall, Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank.
Queen Camilla led the parade in a carriage, while King Charles held audiences at Buckingham Palace in London.
The Middletons have been close to their daughter Kate during this last, difficult year: the princess underwent a demanding surgery in January and at the end of February, after being diagnosed with cancer, she began a cycle of preventive chemotherapy. Carole was photographed in March while she was driving a car with her daughter Kate in her.
Before his first public appearance after his diagnosis last Saturday, at Trooping the Colourthe princess shared in a message, in which she explained that, although he was not “out of danger yet”, he had made “good progress” thanks to the treatments, which will continue in the coming months. “On days when I feel pretty good, it’s a joy to engage in school life, dedicate my personal time to the things that give me energy and positivity, and start working from home a little,” Kate Middleton wrote.
“I can’t wait to attend the King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and I hope to participate in some public engagements over the summer, but I also know I’m not out of the woods yet. I’m learning to be patient, especially with uncertainty. I take each day as it comes, listen to my body, and allow myself to take this much needed time to heal. Thank you so much for your continued understanding and to all of you who have courageously shared your stories with me.”
