The Dutch television station Avrotros protests after the disqualification of Joost Klein a few hours before the Eurovision final. A decision considered “disproportionate” by the Dutch, taken by the EBU after the singer was reported by a woman from the troupe for “intimidation”. Joost Klein allegedly addressed sexist insults to her after performing on stage in Malmo last Thursday, during the semi-final of the event. The Swedish media gave this version, based on the little information released by the police.
What happened backstage
But what happened that evening? It is the Dutch people from Avrotros who give a first version of the facts, with more details than those that have emerged so far. In an Instagram post, it is confirmed that there was an incident following Joost Klein’s performance on Thursday. Contrary to what was stipulated in the agreements, Avrotros explains, «Joost was filmed when he had just got off the stage and had to run to the dressing room». At that point, the artist allegedly «repeatedly said that he didn’t want to be filmed. This was not respected – explains the note – This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost didn’t touch the woman on camera. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and the police.”
The disappointment of the Dutch
When the facts emerged, Avrotros managers say they consulted with the EBU between yesterday and today. They proposed various solutions to the Eurovision organizers. “However, the EBU still decided to disqualify Joost Klein.” A decision that Avrotros considers «very heavy and disproportionate. We are in favor of good manners, there should be no misunderstanding about this, but in our opinion an exclusion order is not proportional to this incident.” Regarding the whole affair, the Dutch say they are «very disappointed and upset for the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to Holland and Europe should not have ended like this.”
