Inside the first official portrait of the Danish royals

The official page of the Danish Royal House had announced it on social media by publishing a post on its Instagram profile in which it said: “The first official portrait of their majesties, the king and queen, will be unveiled tomorrow”. And so it was. At around 10.20am on Thursday 25 April, she appeared on social media, as she promised, the new official photo of the king and queen of Denmark, the first since King Frederik’s accession to the throne on January 14th, after the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe.

The couple follows the age-old tradition

Faithful to centuries-old tradition, the two royals following in the footsteps of their predecessors, posed for their first official photo in gala dress with the collar of the Order of the Elephant, established in 1671 for the coronation of King Christian V in the church of Frederiksborg Castle.

Serene and smiling with eyes pointing away, the portrait, which shows the King and Queen Mary in a formal pose, was taken by photographer Steen Evald in the Green Room of the Royal State Rooms at Christianborg Palace. “The king and queen are therefore portrayed in the historic Palace of Copenhagen, where kings and queens have succeeded one another over time,” reads the press release from the royal house. The portrait will now be displayed in institutional settings, including Danish ships, embassies and consulates around the world.

Is it difficult to be Meghan Markle? From court gossip to arguments with friends

In 2019, David Jenkins wrote about the 365 days since Meghan Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry. Now, many of the anecdotes – from court gossip to arguments with friends – ring resoundingly true, as the Duke has officially changed his primary residence to the United States

For the first time the Queen with the Crown Jewels

In the new photo the couple is wearing their most elegant clothes. King Frederik is in gala uniform with the star of the Order of the Elephant and the star of the Order of Dannebrog while Queen Mary, splendid, has opted for a sumptuous long dark green velvet dress with a lace bodice and sleeves which pairs perfectly with the emerald set with coordinated tiara, chosen by the sovereign for this important occasion (an absolute novelty). On her chest the sovereign also has the diamond brooch with the miniature portrait of the king and the ribbon of the Order of Dannebrog. The queen therefore shows off her crown jewels for the first time with this sparkling set of diamonds and emeralds consisting of a tiara, a necklace and a pair of earrings. The portrait is missing the brooch (also called devant de corsage), which is part of the set and is made up of eight emeralds and a series of diamonds that embellish a gold setting. Many of the stones that make up the set come from a necklace and cross that Queen Sofia Magdalene received from her husband, Christian VI, to celebrate the birth of their first child. It was then decided that after her death the emeralds would be included in the Crown Jewels, without being able to be donated to others. Queen Margrethe wore the emerald set on several occasions. One of the latest was for the gala banquet in honor of the Spanish royals in November 2023. The Crown Jewels cannot be taken out of the country.
