There are no nurses in Italy. They are Indian

“I dream of being able to live here, of bringing my family and my two children aged five and seven who I hear on video calls every day.” Jini Zavier, 36 years old, is one of the six Indian nurses who have been working at the “Don Stefano Palla” retirement home in Piazza Brembana for almost a year. They all come from Kerala, State in southern India. «We looked for nurses in Italy, but without success – says the president Michele Iagulli –. A training course for assistance was also proposed, but no one showed up. Now we can no longer find anyone here and this will be an increasingly important problem in the coming years.”

Six operators from India

The solution came from the cooperative «Stoim» («Kcs» consortium) of Agrate (Monza Brianza) which, through the Milanese agency «Job Just on Business», managed to recruit Indian girls, in different periods, starting from May 2023. Three other Indian nurses had already provided service before them at the «Don Palla» retirement home. Now there are six of them, almost a third of the nurses who work at the retirement home Brembana Square (85 guests).

«A training course for assistance was also proposed, but no one showed up. Now we can no longer find anyone here and this will be an increasingly important problem in the coming years”

But the dream is to bring the family here to us. The cooperative also provides them with accommodation in Piazza Brembana, where they live and are trying to integrate. «Their nursing diploma is valid until 2025 – explains Andrea Minetti, area head of “Stoim” – but should then become permanent. We have always had a good experience with the agency that acts as our intermediary: the nurses come from an area of India where the healthcare facilities are more advanced and have always demonstrated great professionalism. The collaboration began during the Covid period, when there was a need for staff, in 2021: since then a selection was made and the first girls arrived.”
