6 / 7: Economical protein sources: from eggs to legumes

«Healthy, light but low-cost protein sources are eggs, egg whites, cottage cheese, mozzarella, ricotta, feta and legumes. You can often find super offers for white meat (especially chicken and turkey) but also for frozen white fish fillets (which are fine unless they are already processed).” Fairly cheap foods that contain healthy macronutrients and micronutrients are for example pasta, rice and cereals such as spelled and barley, but bread and potatoes are also economical foods and contain complex carbohydrates, essential to provide us with energy on a daily basis. «Low-fat dairy products, eggs, legumes but also white meat and fish fillets represent sustainable protein sources also on an economic level, especially when there are good offers. Good fats are found in extra virgin olive oil, olives, avocados, dried fruit and oil seeds, foods that tend to be more expensive but fundamental in our diet. It is therefore best to buy them when they are on offer. Fruit and vegetables are very rich in mineral salts, vitamins and dietary fiber and tend to be low-budget products” concludes the nutritional biologist specializing in gastro-intestinal disorders Francesca Morganti.
