Lukas Kubiš was one of the revelations of the 2025 season. This year the Slovakian rider experienced his first real year at a professional level wearing the jersey of the Unibet Tietema Rocketswith which he achieved two successes and numerous placings and also stood out in important level races, some of which he had never faced before in his career given that he had previously only raced for Continental teams. In an interview with Domestic Cyclingthe 25-year-old spoke about the growth path that led him to professionalism and in which an important part was the work done in training with his former coach of Dukla Banska Bystrica, his first team, with which he acquired valuable experience in road cycling after his start in MTB.
“I spent five years in the Continental Dukla Banska Bystrica team, and it was more of a way to enjoy life and cycling – said Kubiš – I participated in so many races in Africa and if it wasn’t for cycling, I’m not sure I would have ever gone there… but thanks to cycling I went there and I’m really grateful for all these experiences because I saw a lot of the world and it was a really beautiful experience. I carry with me many beautiful and perfect memories of the races, but also of the local people and everything that surrounded me.”
The real step forward, however, was the move to Elkov-Kasper in 2024: “When I joined Elkov, it became more like professional cyclingor at least of a higher level, because Elkov was also among the top 5, the top 3 in the European Continental ranking. After five years at Dukla, it all started at Elkov. When I joined Elkov, I was really happy with my former coach [alla Dukla]because it made the difference… It made me go from an average runner to a runner capable of winning races in just three, four months“.
“Above all, I put in a lot of hours that season [di allenamento] – continued the 25-year-old – We only concentrated on resistance training. I remember that that year I traveled something like 35-36 thousand kilometers. It was a remarkable distance, especially since I exceeded what I had done in 2023 by more than 200 hours. That was the big difference“.
Thanks also to that work, in 2024 the results began to arrive in higher level races: “There were many races in which I came close to success. I also had a lot of good results in races 1.1 and 2.1 with WorldTour teams. I gave my all at the Paris Olympics, at the European Championships and also in many 1.1 and 2.1 level competitions. I got so many results, they started talking about me and recognized my name. Finally the offers arrived“In the end, the Slovakian signed for Unibet Tietema Rockets, a Professional category team: “I think for a rider from Eastern Europe it is sometimes more difficult to enter the WorldTour, because the sport is less popular there“.
Even at Elkov, however, Kubiš found a coach who allowed him to give the best of himself: “I was really lucky to be able to work with him, he made a difference and prepared me very well for the long and difficult races. Now I work with the coach of the team (Unibet, ed.). I am really grateful to him because he is also a very experienced person. I’m very grateful to him for the whole season, because he found that balance, which is how to maintain really good form throughout the season. My form didn’t have any ups and downs, but remained consistent throughout the year“.
