During the flu season, the elderly and frail people represent the categories most at risk of health complications, even more so this year given the continuing spread of Sars-Cov2. The aim of the campaign is to promote vaccination against Covid-19 and seasonal flu, especially in frail people and the elderly. Target. All recipients of the seasonal flu and Covid-19 vaccination offer and, in particular, people whose health is most at risk, namely the frail and the elderly.

Vaccination campaign 2023-24

In conjunction with the anti-flu campaign for the 2023/24 season, the launch of a national vaccination campaign against COVID-19 is expected with the use of a new formulation of mRNA and protein vaccines (updated monovalent formulation XBB 1.5), whose approval by EMA and AIFA is expected for late summer/early autumn and whose doses are expected to be available starting in October. The aim of the national campaign is to prevent mortality, hospitalizations and severe forms of COVID-19 in elderly and highly frail peopleand protect the pregnant women they healthcare workers e social health. These groups of people (see Annex 1 of the Ministerial Circular of 14 August 2023) are recommended and offered a booster dosevalid for 12 months, with the new updated vaccine formulation.
Vaccination may also be recommended to family members and cohabitants of people with serious frailties.   • Booster vaccination with bivalent COVID-19 vaccines. Following the authorization by EMA and AIFA of the bivalent formulation original/BA.4-5 of the Comirnaty vaccine, the following are now available, as part of the anti SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 vaccination campaign: two bivalent formulations of m-RNA vaccines (original/omicron BA.1 e original/BA.4-5 di Spikevax and Comirnaty). These vaccines, explained the Technical Scientific Commission (CTS) of AIFA, have shown the ability to induce an antibody response greater than that of the original monovalent vaccine both against the Omicron BA.1 variant and the BA.4 and BA variants. 5.
    In terms of safety, the available data show no differences compared to the original monovalent vaccine.
  • Further booster doses following the second. An additional booster dose with m-RNA vaccine in the bivalent formulation is registered mail to the following people who have already received a second booster dose with monovalent mRNA vaccine, once at least 120 days have passed since the same or the last SARS-CoV-2 infection (date of the positive diagnostic test): people aged 80 and over on; guests of residential facilities for the elderly; people aged 60 and over with frailty motivated by concomitant/pre-existing pathologies (see attachment to the Circular of 17 October 2022). At the request of the interested party, all other subjects over sixty who have already received a second booster shot will also be able to get vaccinated with a further dose of the vaccine.
