In 2022, 20.5 million children have not received at least one dose of vaccine, 14 million have not received any vaccinations and almost 33 million children are vulnerable to measles, a disease that still causes 136,000 deaths per year (CDC Centers for Disease Control and prevention).
“Humanly possible” is the claim of World Immunization Week 2024, which is celebrated from 24 to 30 April and is promoted by the World Health Organization to reiterate, once again, the importance of vaccination prevention.
“Humanly possible, a literary translation that not only reminds us of the centrality of the human being and humanization, which has always been a priority driver of neonatal care, but underlines how every objective can be possible thanks to the commitment of everyone, of healthcare workers first of all -” declared Luigi Orfeo, president of the Italian Society of Neonatology (SIN) -. Inevitably in a period like the one we are experiencing, these words remind us of another motto, “stay human”, which interprets for all of us the strong and urgent desire to put an end to every conflict. The numerous current wars, together with economic recessions and the increase in vaccination hesitancy, are some of the threats to the immunization of children and against which we have the duty to act, to continue the great investment in the health of future generations”.

Sin continues to be committed to promoting the most universal possible protection of all children, in line with what has already been promoted in recent years with other companies in the maternal and child area, with initiatives to support vaccination campaigns.
“Today, the possibilities for preventing communicable diseases are not limited only to vaccinations. We have other immunization tools available – claims Nicola Laforgia, director of the Sin Training Plan -. Anti-RSV prophylaxis with monoclonal antibodies (Palivizumab) has been active for some time, reserved for certain categories of newborns at risk, but another monoclonal antibody is now available (Nirsevimab), approved by AIFA in January 2023, capable of protecting, with a single administration, all newborns”.
The SIN, together with the Board of the Vaccinal Calendar for Life, the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SItI), the Italian Society of Paediatrics (SIP), the Italian Federation of Pediatricians (FIMP) and the Italian Federation of Pediatric Doctors General Medicine (FIMMG) is strongly committed to requesting the adoption by political decision makers of this universal prophylaxis strategy for Respiratory Syncytial Virus diseases for all newborns.
World Immunization Week is, therefore, an important opportunity to continue promoting pediatric vaccinations and to adopt further prevention methods, thus also reducing the incidence of RSV bronchiolitis, which can cause serious clinical pictures, especially in the neonatal period and in the first months of life.
