Apple, smartphone sales in China Q1 down 19%

BEIJING (Reuters) – Apple’s (NASDAQ:) smartphone sales in China fell 19% in the first quarter of the year, recording its worst performance since 2020, showing how the company’s dominance in the high-end segment has deteriorated. been put under pressure by Huawei’s new product launches.

This is what emerges from market data compiled by the research company Counterpoint according to which Apple’s share in the world’s largest smartphone market fell to 15.7% compared to 19.7% the previous year, almost on par with that of Huawei, whose sales jumped by 70%.

Apple lost its crown as China’s top smartphone seller to local rival Vivo, slipping to third place in the quarter, followed by Huawei whose market share jumped to 15.5% from 9.3% a year earlier. Local competitor Honor placed second.

Huawei unveiled the Pura 70 series of high-end phones last week, after launching the Mate 60 series in August. The Mate 60 was seen as the Chinese company’s return to the high-end market and described as a triumph over US sanctions against the company, as the phones contain an advanced chip made in China.
