How DiscoverEU works
DiscoverEU is an initiative that is part of the Erasmus+ program and aims to offer 18-year-olds a travel experience capable of promoting their sense of belonging to the European Union, exploring the diversity of Europe, its heritage culture and its history, make contacts with people from all over the continent and, ultimately, discover yourself.
For the round of interrail questions of spring 2024, the European Commission and the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) will select at least 35,000 young people who meet the eligibility criteria described below. Winners will be provided with DiscoverEU pass to explore Europe between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2025 for a maximum period of one month.
In fact, the winners will generally travel by train. However, in order to ensure the widest possible access, the project offers alternative modes of transport such as ferries and buses where necessary and takes into account considerations regarding environmental protection, travel issues and distances.
How to register for DiscoverEU?
To apply to participate in the DiscoverEu programme, simply go to the European Youth Portal. Applications can be submitted until 12pm on Tuesday 30 April 2024. To participate and receive the 2023 interrail passes you must meet the following requirements: requirements:
- be born between 1 July 2005 (inclusive) and 30 June 2006 (inclusive)
- correctly enter the number of your identity card, passport or legal residence card in the online application form
- be a citizen or legal resident in one of the Member States of the European Union, including the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) or one of the third countries associated with the Erasmus+ program (Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey) .

Who satisfies all requirements can participate in a selection quiz (unless you decide to participate in a group). Those selected will be able to travel between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2025 for a maximum period of one month.
How many young people applied for DiscoverEU?
Regarding this round of questions for the DiscoverEU pass, expiring on April 30, 2024, the maximum number of applications that can be accepted is 35,000. All unselected candidates will be placed in a reserve list in descending order based on the answers to the quiz questions and the tie-breaking question.
If the selected candidates withdraw their application or if the value of the passes awarded is lower than the available budget, the European Commission and the EACEA may award the passes to the candidates registered on the reserve list until the available budgetary resources are fully used. The consumption of the budget will be reviewed every month.
How do young people travel for free?
Passes for selected candidates will be booked, purchased and delivered by the contractor designated by the European Commission and EACEA. Selected applicants must under no circumstances book passes, either on their own or through a travel agency. Passes purchased directly by selected candidates are not refunded.
The contractor designated by the European Commission and EACEA will contact the selected applicants and give them access to the DiscoverEU Travel mobile app. This app will provide access to support and provide participants with tips on how to design their itineraries and prepare for their trip. In the mobile app all participants will have access to a digital discount card (European Youth Card).
