Mara Venier is back in hospital: the presenter of Sunday In she underwent surgery again for maculopathyafter having already undergone five operations. He had already faced a similar operation last November. In a story on Instagram, Mara Venier showed herself lying on a hospital bed, with herright eye blindfolded by a transparent protection. The comment: “Let’s end the year like this. Happy New Year everyone. Let’s hope it really is the end of this year.”
Mara Venier and maculopathy
Mara Venier suffers from maculopathy. Last November 9th he talked about it during an episode of Sunday In: “Today is difficult for me. I apologize. Sometimes I can’t seesorry if I miss a beat,” she apologized live.
During the episode she made it known that she would undergo surgery, yet another. The vision problems for Mara Venier began in 2024, with ahemorrhage in the eye which caused a series of consequences, including maculopathy.

This is how Mara Venier discovered maculopathy: “One Monday evening while watching TV I realized that I was only seeing half of the TV. I closed my left eye and I realized that I couldn’t see anything: all dark, all black. The next morning I was already in the operating room.”
What is maculopathy and what are the symptoms
The maculopathyo macular degenerationis a pathology that affects the maculathe central portion of the retina responsible for sharp vision, details and colors. The San Donato Group website reports a writing by Dr. Gianluigi Bolognesi, an ophthalmologist who briefly explains the symptoms of maculopathy.
Maculopathy is a progressive and in many cases irreversible disease, but early diagnosis and adequate therapies can slow its evolution, reducing the risk of loss of central vision.
The macula is the retinal region where photoreceptors transform light stimuli into electrical impulses that are processed by the brain. When this area is damaged the patient suffers from less defined vision, with color alteration.
In most cases the peripheral vision remains intact while the central vision it deteriorates progressively. This makes it difficult to carry out everyday tasks such as reading, driving and recognizing faces.
There are various forms of maculopathy. Mara Venier has one exudative maculopathy: it is less frequent but more aggressive and is characterized by the formation of new vessels under the retina (i.e. abnormal blood vessels) which can rapidly damage the macula.
I risk factors include:
- advanced age;
- familiarity;
- cigarette smoking;
- arterial hypertension;
- diabetes;
- hypercholesterolemia;
- obesity;
- excessive exposure to UV rays without adequate protection.
I symptoms the most frequent are:
- blurry or reduced central vision;
- metamorphopsia (straight lines perceived as wavy or distorted);
- alteration of color perception;
- dark spot in the center of the visual field (scotoma);
- photophobia.
