Simone Annicchiarico arrives on Domenica In to remember his father Walter Chiari, born 100 years ago and died on 20 December 1991. Son of the comedian and of the actress Alida Chelli, Simone retraces his life through images and videos shown in the Rai 1 studio by Mara Venier.

Simone Annichiarico remembers his father

Simone’s life was made up of many journeys that Annicchiarico recounts in his book “100% Walter”. The last stop of the two is in Costa Rica: «He had been telling me for 20 years that he wanted to take me there, we reached Marietto. That trip coincides with bad news: the death of Eric Clapton and Lory del Santo’s son, Conor, who falls from the skyscraper. Dad always told me that Conor looked a lot like me, he was very good friends with Lory and Eric, that day was the first time I saw him cry. I couldn’t find him anymore because he was shocked by that news. That day there on the seashore he was destroyed and said that in his opinion, as Conor fell he looked for his arms and he usually played with them by throwing him into the air. It’s the first time I’ve seen him cry.”

Simone Annicchiarico: «My father Walter Chiari used cocaine as Viagra. He was shy, drugs unlocked him. Women liked him a lot.”

The relationship with Pippo Baudo

Then Simone remembers his adolescence: «Pippo Baudo saved my life when I enrolled in the scientific high school, I had nothing to do with mathematics but I had fallen in love with the teacher’s daughter, he enrolled me in the artistic high school because he said that I drew too well. Thanks to Pippo I met the friends of my life, he was more important than my father and my mother in those years there”

The parents

The love between Walter Chiari and Alida Chelli is turbulent, made up of leave and take: «My parents were together for a cappuccino. I stayed with mum by decision of the state otherwise I would have gone with dad who was always travelling. Then I went to Dallas with mum’s partner then we returned to Italy mum and dad got back together but broke up soon after”

The move to Milan

Then Simone decides to go and live in Milan, after Conor’s death then Ugo died, the year before Giorgio Ghezzi, Giordano Roti, Annicchiarico felt he had to be close to his father: «I felt he had little time, even though he was doing very well . It was my feeling, I told mum she didn’t believe it, I went there in September October and he died in December.” Walter Chiari was found in the room of the residence in the suburbs of Milan where he lived.

Walter’s death

Simone remembers the moments before his father’s death: «A few days before his death I went on holiday with my longtime babysitter, I was skiing. He called me three hours before he died, he had a ringing voice and he told me that he had been to the cardiologist in Pavia and told him that we could play another 10 years of tennis. He was lively and full of plans. After three hours we were already off to other shores. That evening he called me, my mother and two of his friends. We’re all wondering what happened, we don’t know the truth but it was a Waltchiarian ending. More than my father, I miss those men who built the 20th century.”
