Paola Perego and the kidney cancer discovered when it was still in its early stages

Paola Perego, born in 1966 and in enviable physical shape, explained to the newspaper OK Cheers of having discovered through a screening test the presence of kidney cancer, fortunately still in its infancy. «I am a lucky woman, because I have the possibility of having checks done privately and with a simple abdominal ultrasound I was able to discover that I had a kidney tumor at the beginning of its evolution and therefore promptly undergo the right treatment, which in my case was a surgery. Unfortunately for many people this is not the case”, commented Perego, referring to the very long times and frequent interruptions from the national public health system. «Newspapers often talk about the fact that many Italians give up treatments and tests for economic reasons. It is something profoundly unfair, indeed I would say unacceptable in a country like ours. It is useless to organize campaigns for the early diagnosis of diseases, if it then takes months if not years to get an appointment. Too many people turning to the National Health Service they face endless waiting listswhich can transform a manageable situation into a gigantic problem”, added the TV presenter, summarizing the feelings of many.

Italians and prevention: who (doesn’t) do what

According to a recent survey by the UniSalute Health Observatory, 4 out of 10 Italians would do more prevention if waiting times were shorterwhile almost one in two Italians (45%) prefer to seek treatment only when they begin to suffer from a real disorder or illness.
Although the entire sample (93%) states that they have consulted their GP at least once in 2023 – and in the last 12 months, four out of five Italians (80%) have also had blood tests carried out, with the women most careful (83%) compared to men (77%) – the survey revealed a disheartening picture regarding many specialist visits: more than one Italian in three (35%), for example, has not had a dental visit or dental hygiene for over 3 years, and 44% have never had a dermatological examination to evaluate moles. Even the situation of typical female health checks is not reassuring: One in four women (25%) has not gone to the gynecologist for at least 3 years, and almost one in three (30%) has not had a Pap test for the same amount of time.
